Interesting… let’s see what I can do

Turns out I can do lots. It's not just a confession but also a realisation because I needed to have some grounding before proceeding.

There had always been something different about Hyacinth. She was the only person who could make her doubt. Ever since they first met — Malus cringed at the memory — Hyacinth had been confident. Confident in herself, her powers, and her future victory. It was earned as well. She was always one or two steps ahead of everyone, and could convince people with just a few well chosen words.

Malus hated her at first. She was the perfect golden child, born in power, with a silver spoon in her mouth. Malus had to fight to get where she was, what she had. She only knew the taste of mud and salt for the longest time. They were antithesis, opposite, meant to be trapped in an endless conflict of ideals. Yet, that’s not what happened.

Hundred of years had passed since those events. They all seemed so small and meaningless now. Malus wasn’t petty enough to hold a grudge for centuries, especially considering how Hyacinth’s involvement brought lasting peace. From opposites, they became acquaintances, coworkers and finally friends.

When they celebrated the revolution’s first century, a realisation struck Malus. No one from that time had lived long enough to cheer with her. No one, except Hyacinth. It was with ears full of music, eyes full of colors, and a cup full of rhum that Malus realised it was always going to be just the two of them. No matter what happened, they would always have each other. It felt silly at the time. A silly thought that was born from alcohol. Easily dismissed and forgotten.

Years went on. People were born, lived, and died. She hardly had the chance to get to know them before they were gone. Any meaningful relationship felt fickle and doomed.

It was the total opposite with Hyacinth. The years had only strengthened their bonds, and time was never an issue. There was always going to be a tomorrow for them. The other would always be there. There were times where it felt constricting, but in the end, Malus was glad things were the way they were.

"Malus? You’re distracted today."

A gentle voice snapped her out of her thinking. She glanced at the game board they were playing.

"I’spose I am."

She moved a piece without consideration.

"Is something on your mind?" Hyacinth’s eyes were focused on the game.

"Just thinking. About life and time."

It didn’t take long before Hyacinth made a calculated move.

"Care to share?" She was looking right in her eyes.

"I think… that we’re basically spending our life together."

She glanced over the board. There wasn’t much she could do except press on. Hyacinth chuckled gently. At her words or at her game moves, Malus wasn’t sure.

"And I like that. Wouldn’t have it any other way" She suddenly felt very invested in the board game, preferring to look at it then at her. Her cheeks warmed a bit as she spoke. What she was about to say? It was sappy. Her opponent didn’t falter however, and moved her piece. Malus picked one up absentmindedly and spun it around her fingers.

"What I’m saying, is that I want that. I want us to spend the rest of our life together, however long that may be."

She set down the piece, and looked in Hyacinth’s vibrant eyes.

"I love you."

She smiled. Without breaking eye contact, Hyacinth made her final move.

"I know."

Checkmate.
