Definitely did not do Maligne Canyon justice. I need to go back!!! One of my favourite places so far. Along with Edith Cavell Meadows, I think I like Jasper. #malignecanyon #canyons #watercolours #travelsketch #travelsketches (at Maligne Canyon Jasper, Alberta)
Maligne Canyon, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada
On March 6th 2017, I drove up to Banff National Park after spending a few days in Calgary with some of my high school friends and having flown out to Alberta from Quebec (where I currently live). I stayed at the Samesun Hostel (which I highly recommend to anyone who wants to meet awesome open-minded backpackers from across the globe) where I ended up meeting an awesome guy (shoutout to you Greg from Chicago). After talking for a while, we decided to head out early the next morning to Jasper National Park which I was begging to see but wasn’t sure I wanted to drive there on my own. So 6am the next morning, we drive towards Jasper on a half tank of gas knowing that we’ll have to stop for gas on the way there. Thing is, we both completely forgot until the gas light went off indicating we had no more. Hopefully a generous hostel owner in the middle of nowhere had 7L of gas in hand which saved our lives and allowed us to arrive in Jasper by barely making it (once again). Arrived in Jasper, we knew we wanted to see the Maligne Canyon which sounded magnificient so that was our first stop and indeed it was incredible. Guided tours were offered with cleats to prevent you from slipping on the ice while in the canyon, however it was a 60$ package so we decided to go without and we’re glad we did. The ice walk was completely mind-blowing! I highly recommend it to anyone just for the view even if you have already been in canyons before or not. After a quick photoshoot in the canyon to capture the view, we headed back out to Banff National Park while stopping on the way to take quick shots as well with the wonderful mountains on the famous Icefields Parkway. A wonderful day nonetheless with an amazing guy I’m so glad to have met and I hope I’ll get the chance to see again somewhere else in the world! With love, Alex.
