Earlier this year, probably before I heard back from Fulbright, I watched Akasa Kusum, a Sinhalese film from 2009. I remembered coming across the wikipedia page during my sophomore year, while trying to do researching on the other film industries in South Asia. I gained access to the DVD or maybe it was this YouTube video, but regardless, I finally saw this film. What I really liked about it was the casual placement of three strong female characters. This would never happen in a Hindi film. Strong female characters have become a recent phenomena and that's all thanks to Vidya Balan. I enjoyed the strong dynamics between the characters and the complexity of the plot itself. It didn't leave the same sense of urgency that I have seen in other films, but it was nice, nonetheless.

Actresses: Malini Fonseka, who has very recently made news with her political life; Nimmi Harasgama, who is probably my favorite Sinhalese language actress; and Dilhani Ekanayake

Plot: It's a story based on the intersection between entertainment and women. The plot is character development, not necessarily a story.

I'm currently watching Akasa Kusum, a Sinhala film. 

At around the half hour mark, old Sinhala film songs start to play. The first from the montage, Edath Sooraya Adath Soorya from Sudu Pata Meedum Galala, immediately struck a chord. I recognized it from somewhere, but couldn't place my finger on it. Andrew was amazed that I even had this much information racked in my head to begin with. The tune started to wear on me, and I quickly employed my father's help. He immediately recognized it as Kaun Hai Jo Sapno Mein Aaya from Jhuk Gaya Aasman.

The moral of the story - Hindi films are the binding theme through my family.

In other news, Sinhala films are really great. I'm curious what Sri Lankan Tamil films are like. Anyone have sources??
