Rare photos of Madhubala taken for Life Magazine by James Burke c. 1951. These pictures offer a special glimpse into the timeless beauty of this classic Bollywood actress. She appears almost entirely barefaced and with her hair undone, appearing especially casual in contrast to her more glamorous looks that she is more popularly known for. Even with her acne showing, she still exudes the special kind of beauty that is carried by her everlasting inner charm and charisma. 

Madhubala rose to fame at a young age with her performance in Barsaat ki Raat and her career peaked with her most notable film, Mughal-e-Azam. She worked hard throughout her career, even with her heart condition, a ventricular septal defect or, “hole in the heart,” which gradually deteriorated her health. She died in 1969, just shortly after her 36th birthday.

Hey everyone, just a reminder that yesterday the supreme court decided that its unconstitutional for the police to look through your phone unless they have a warrant, EVEN if you are placed under arrest.

HOWEVER, the police CAN search your phone without a warrant if given verbal consent and they AREN’T required to tell you that you can request that they get a warrant. It’s up to you to know your rights, so PLEASE PLEASE reblog this so we can spread the word!

Bombay Spleen - Tanuja Desai Hidier

I was a huge fan of Tanuja Desai Hidier’s Born Confused young adult novel that came out in 2002. It’s one of my favorite books that talks about the young Desi experience. I was very excited to hear that Hidier was working on a sequel to the novel, Bombay Blues, which released in 2014. 

Hidier, being a musician herself, dropped a double whammy - she also released an album to go with the novel! The album is called Bombay Spleen and is Hidier’s second album. Can’t wait to get the book and listen to these tracks - at the same time.

This is Neerja Bhanot. On September 5, 1986, mere hours before her 23rd birthday, Neerja turned to see 4 heavily-armed terrorists boarding Pan Am flight 73, where she was a flight attendant. She dashed to the cockpit to warn the pilots, but was caught by one of the hijackers, who’d grabbed her ponytail. Nevertheless, she managed to shout a secret “hijack code” to the cockpit crew – who, according to regulations, quickly evacuated, leaving the 400 passengers and 13-man flight crew at the mercy of the 4 enraged terrorists.

With the cockpit crew gone, and Neerja now the most senior crew member on the plane, she took charge. At the orders of the terrorists – who were part of the Libya-backed Abu Nidal Organization – she collected the passports of all the passengers, taking care to hide or destroy the American ones, so the terrorists could not target those passengers.

After 17 hours on board, the terrorists opened fire, at which point Neerja threw open the emergency exit. Instead of saving herself by sliding down the emergency chute, she used her body to shield three escaping children, and died in the process.

Afterwards, she was awarded India’s highest peacetime honor, the Ashok Chakra Award, becoming the youngest recipient in the nation’s history. She was also commemorated on a stamp in 2004.

I've been working at the local organic vegetarian restaurant and although there is more diversity in the staff than in the customers, because I'm neither white nor black, I am still tokenized.

On the whole, this isn't irritating. Well, yeah it is, but that's not what encouraged this blurb. I just realized that despite wanting to use Sri Lankan and Indian influences in my outfits, I probably won't be able to unless I'm ready to answer the onslaught of annoying "ethnic" questions. I'm not the spokesperson, please leave me alone.
