something i think about a lot wrt tales of xillia 2 (NOTE: i’m not sure if soukyoku no crossroads covers this at all because i can’t read japanese well so i’ve only skimmed the manga so this is purely based on the games):

alvin, as heir to the svent family, has legal claim to his family title, and given his experience in reize maxia and his desire to help bridge the gap between the two worlds, it doesn’t make sense to me that he wouldn’t try to use that public spotlight to their advantage. like, if he could get a hold of that money, imagine how much easier jude would have it with funding if he could use it to that benefit. considering his relative is also working on the project, it would be a logical use of money, too. 

my theory is that alvin knows this, but isn’t ready for the responsibility of taking those steps, so he latches on to yurgen and decides to work with him and seek redemption for his sins (both in general and on a personal level with yurgen).
