Hi, thank you so much for volunteering to answer our Brit-specific questions. You mentioned you call Christmas lights fairy lights in the UK. Do you still call them that when they are, let's say on Trafalgar Square? And am I right to assume usually most big cities (London) don't take them down till (very) early January?
It depends really on what pattern they’re in, where they are and what time of year they’re up, at least for me anyway. I don’t know if this is a normal thing, or something weird that I do, like the whole bap/barm debate but thats a whole ‘nother topic.
For me, lights on a christmas tree/in a christmas shape, that are up during the christmas season, are Christmas lights. However if they’re not in a Christmas pattern, or up at Christmas, they just become ‘lights/fairy lights’ if they’re in the town centre. Fairy lights are more like the tiny strings of lights that you hang in your room and stuff to me.
Big cities usually go all out on lights during the festive season (Liverpool, London, Manchester, etc… maybe Blackpool) so they are usually just called Christmas lights.
As for when they take them down, I consulted ‘me mam’ (my mum) and she said they’re taken down around early January. Thanks Mam.
Sorry if this was confusing!!
