Today we celebrate the Holy Martyr Mammas of Cappadocia. Saint Mammas was from Caesarea of Cappadocia and was born in prison where his parents were suffering for Christ's sake and ended their lives. He was named Mammas because, after he had long remained without speaking, he addressed his foster mother Ammia as "mamma." He preached Christianity during his teenage years, and a lion from the fields is said to have remained with him as companion. In iconography, his attribute is the lion. He contested for Christ about the year 275 at age 15. He is commemorated by the Church, with his parents martyrs Theodotus and Rufinaon, on September 2.
