@xamassed asked: "How come you ain't like 'em?" His voice was oddly low and pinched, like he couldn't speak past a lump in his throat. "Why don't you pick on me like they do? Wouldn't it just be easier to agree with 'em and call me a scumbag? They ain't wrong." ( mammon )
Things were fine when she left to go shopping for a few things she needed. By the time she returned; however, the brothers were all standing separately in smaller clusters by the common room... save but one. The uncomfortable atmosphere told her everything she needed to know. Stopping by her room to put her purchases away, Alice changed into more comfortable clothes and headed down to Mammon’s room.
They all fought like cats and dogs. And not without reason either. The second eldest in particular would often trouble his brothers and rope them into trouble, directly or indirectly. Still, the way the others spoke of him never sat right with her. They’ve been family for hundreds of years, and as an outsider, it wasn’t her place to say anything. But she wouldn’t join in either. As she understood things, it was simply part of his nature. Mammon could not help himself anymore than Beel could stop his own hunger.
Her knocking on his door went unanswered even when she insisted to the point of it being annoying, so she had no choice but to simply open it herself. The main lights were turned off, with only the little spotlights above his closet and his bed giving the large open space a soft glow. Making her way down the stairs, she saw he wasn’t on the couches, and even when she’d gotten to the bottom floor, it still took her a moment to find him curled up on the floor by his bed next to the farthest wall, his back facing the door.
It was weird, wrong even. Normally he would already be complaining about his brothers or telling her off for coming in without permission. But for him to be so quiet... Following his lead, she chose to not say anything either, simply walking up the wooden steps and joining him on the floor. What she really wanted to do was pull him into a hug, but Alice wasn’t sure how he would react and chose to just lean into him first, pressing her arm to his so he could have a point of contact with someone else and know he wasn’t alone.
When he finally spoke, the sound of his voice broke her heart. “Oh, Mammon...” Shifting so she could see him, her brows furrowed in further concern as he refused to look up at her. Instead of cupping his face and guiding his gaze to hers, she daringly slid onto his lap, which had him snapping his head up. Wasting no time, she wrapped her arms around his neck and warmly molded herself to him, hugging him tightly.
“You know, you do a lot of silly things to your brothers.” And even if he couldn’t help his greed, it didn’t mean that some of the stunts he pulled weren’t hurtful. “Some of which I wish you’d apologize for. But as much as you cursed and complained when we first met, I never felt any malice from you.” And she knew exactly what that felt like, when people actively wished her harm. Funny how she could never sense it when an actual demon was threatening to leave her to die.
Pulling away just enough to look at his handsome face, she pushed his fluffy bangs aside and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. “You can be a handful at times, but I love you all the same.” She was suddenly glad for the low lighting, hoping that it helped disguise how much her cheeks were burning as she pecked his lips with a timid little smile.
“You are my first, after all...”
