Fae Biology: Circulatory and Respiratory Systems: Mana-Oxygen Efficiency
Fae hearts and lungs are built in a special way that lets them live for hundreds or even thousands of years. They don’t get tired or old as fast as humans do. The main trick is that their heart and lungs work together with magic energy (called mana) so they don’t have to eat or breathe as much as we do.
The Heart – Like a Super-Slow, Super-Strong Pump
A fae heart beats very slowly – only about 40 to 50 times a minute when they’re calm (our hearts beat 60–100 times). That slow beat saves energy so they can live a really long time without wearing out.
Inside the heart there are tiny crystal-like spots that hold extra mana. Every time the heart beats, it pushes blood full of oxygen (for breathing) AND mana (for magic) all around the body. The blood looks a bit shiny or colorful because of the mana in it.
When a fae like Malleus uses a huge spell or breathes fire, his heart speeds up for a short time to send more mana and oxygen where it’s needed – like to his horns or mouth. The horns act like pipes that help move the magic and also cool the body down so it doesn’t overheat.
The heart also helps clean up “blot” – that black inky stuff (A BITCH) that builds up when fae use too much magic or feel really sad/angry. The heart has little filters that catch most of the blot so it doesn’t hurt the body right away. But if too much blot piles up (like during an overblot), the filters get blocked and the ink starts leaking out everywhere, making the fae go crazy and grow monster parts.
Lilia is a good example of what happens when the heart gets old. In Book 7 we learn his magic is “fading.” That means the special mana parts in his heart are getting weak after so many years and after he gave a lot of his life energy to help hatch Malleus’s egg. So now his heart can’t pump mana as well, he gets tired faster, and he feels weaker. It’s kind of like when an old phone battery doesn’t hold a charge anymore.
The Lungs – Big Bags That Grab Both Air and Magic
Fae lungs are bigger than human lungs compared to their body size. They can hold a lot of air and also pull in mana straight from the air around them – almost like how plants take in sunlight.
Because they can grab mana from the air, fae don’t need to eat food every day like we do. They get a lot of their energy from breathing in magic instead of just from food. That’s why they can go a long time without eating and still be strong.
Different kinds of fae have lungs that do extra cool things:
- Dragon fae (like Malleus) have special extra pockets inside their lungs. These pockets store super-oxygen air. When Malleus wants to breathe fire, he squeezes those pockets really fast and the mana + oxygen mix turns into a flame right in his throat. He could do tiny sparks as a baby, but now he can make huge fire blasts.
- Bat fae (like Lilia) have lungs with lots of folds and pockets that help make high-pitched sounds for echolocation (like how bats “see” in the dark by shouting and listening to the echo). They also like to hang upside down because it helps blood flow back to the lungs easier when they rest.
- Crocodile fae (like Sebek’s mom’s side) probably have lungs that work well underwater for a little while, kind of like how alligators can hold their breath for a long time.
Sunlight can hurt the lungs of night-loving fae (nocturnals like Lilia). The sun damages the thin parts inside the lungs that grab mana, so they feel worse during the day and get tired faster. That’s one reason Lilia looks extra sleepy or weak in bright places.
What Happens When Things Go Wrong (Overblot & Fading)
When a fae gets too much blot (from using tons of magic or feeling super lonely/sad/angry), two bad things happen at the same time:
1. The heart gets clogged with ink and can’t pump mana properly → the body starts running out of magic energy.
2. The lungs fill with blot smoke → it’s hard to breathe and hard to pull in new mana from the air.
That’s why during overblot the fae looks scary: black ink drips out, they grow extra monster parts, and they can’t control themselves. It’s like their heart and lungs are having a really bad fight inside.
Lilia’s fading is slower but similar. His heart and lungs are just slowly losing the ability to hold and move mana. He can still fight and do magic, but every big spell costs him more and he recovers slower. It’s like an old car that still drives but needs a lot more gas and repairs.
Why This Matters in the Story( I am about to get sappy)
The way fae hearts and lungs work explains a lot about why they act the way they do:
- They live so long → they watch human friends grow old and die, which makes them feel very alone (especially Malleus).
- They don’t need to eat much → they seem “above” normal things, which makes humans think they’re stuck-up.
- Blot builds up from strong feelings → that’s why overblot happens when they’re super hurt or angry, not just from using too much magic.
- Lilia’s fading shows even fae aren’t immortal forever → it makes his goodbye in Book 7 feel really sad and real.
So in short: fae hearts beat slow and strong, lungs grab magic from the air, and together they let fae live crazy long lives… but strong feelings can still break them inside, just like they break humans. That’s what makes the Diasomnia boys so interesting – they look powerful and scary on the outside, but their hearts (literally!) can get hurt too.
