Happy Birthday Across the Worlds
The darkness of the house sent a cold chill down the amber haired girl as she stepped through the front door, her fingers reaching out for the light switch and frowning as the flicking of the plastic didn’t bring the rain of light from the bulbs above. The whispering of unseen voices drew a slow shiver from her as she slowly produced the small flashlight on her key chain and began to look about the foyer.
Slow were her footsteps as she proceeded from room to room, flicking lights and frowning as they failed to provide the comfortable glow she needed. It was as she stepped into the living room that the flickering of flames rose before her eyes across the darkness. Like eyes the flames seemed to follow her as she moved, her own eyes staring nervously as she began to step back with slow creaking steps even as more flames began to flicker to life about the first pair in a slow and gradual pacing. As her hand reached once more for the lightswitch to flick it she heard the click of the switch connecting, and the bulb in the ceiling igniting like a rising sun in the darkness to a room filled with streams and laughter.
Boxes wrapped in bright colors rested upon the table as her friend stood with a cake in her arms, the flames of the candles flickering as the red and blue haired girl smiled brightly. “Happy Birthday!” She shouted to the startled girl, laughing as her amber haired friend stumbled slightly and fell on her behind.
“Happy Birthday Ember, I promised I’d remember no matter how far apart we were.” came the soft voice before the girl’s eyes opened, gasping a bit in shock as she sat up in bed.. mane in her eyes lightly and hooves on the soft cushion even as the gentle memory lingered in her mind. “Happy Birthday, I’ll never forget it, Ember!” the voice called as it faded and the waking world gently took hold of her focus once more.
