Okay so this is gonna be long and rambly and im on mobile so......

So ive been relistening to The Adventure Zone and thinking a lot about why it has struck such a chord with me

So i walked into listening this amazing show only knowing that its was dnd and that taako was a fabulous elf wizard like literally thats all i knew

But i also came into from having learning to read write and do basic math playing dnd. I quite literally grew up playing dnd. And they knew nothing. They were just learning. So often during the beginning of the first listen id be sitting there naming what check they should be making and what would be the dnd thing to do. And i think part of why it was fun for me is that i know dnd i know how much more difficult it was and how comparatively easy 5th is but since i wasnt trying to teach them it wasnt frustrating. But at some point and i cant pinpoint that point but that voice shut up cause the great thing about dnd is the story is everything i mean theres rules and a lot need to stay but theres a lot of if it would be cool the dm will allow you to try

So the thing im thinking is why i totally listened to 3 godsdamned years of taz in 2 weeks and proceeded to relisten and reblog damn near every taz thing i could find and literally nothing else is its such a good story

I think the thing that kinda sold me on it is that it fills a dnd shaped void in my heart. It sounds and feels the way telling stories from my families dnd adventures does. Like i said i grew up with this and my parents have these dramatic and amazing stories that literally i retell to friends to convince them to play

And like i love crit role and actually playing but taz cuts out all the down time and gets right to the story. Like crit role i love its like actually playing but there are entire eps that nothing happens in but with taz its the way id talk about the adventures i played. Fir example i dont talk about the perfectly safe hallway we spent an hour trying to determine if it was trapped but i do tell the story of the cursed book that made my characters stomach try to crawl up her throat and the story of the cave we had to collapse because one party member (dragon cause it was a dragon adventure) used cone of shard on a fucking pudding and that is a super dumb spell to use on a pudding (the mf split every time they take slashing damage)

The other thing that taz has done is inspired me to write an adventure for my friends based around my parents legendary characters (which dear gods ive got so fucking much world building to do)

And like im going to put way more work into this than i ever have (including music cause the main thing centers around the cult of a bard turned god so music is necessary) & and dear gods im gonna need help and time on that

But taz has inspired me and feels like playing dnd with my family does and its been awhile since i had a chance to play so i like have filled a void here

And i figured out why taako is my favorite (lup is amazing and would be my fav if we got more time with her) he reminds me a bit of my dads bard like they are very different but theres some similarities and thats cool. And taako is so full of apparent contradictions but they make sense and its wonderful to see that develop

I literally love pretty much every character to show up and i understand theyre actions even if i disagree with them (lucretia obvi like i understand her motivations but i hate the actions and the results)

I want more in the world of balance but i understand that its over and trying to continue it would fall flat if they tried to continue this indefinitely

And while commitment was short i loved it. I definitely identify with Naydia(thats prob wrong spelling but continuing) and i love Kardala. Like i clearly love balance more but commitment was great.

And im enjoying the experimentation and its inspiring me to play other d20 systems while trying to build this other adventure

Like ive been unmotivated and uninterested in anything recently and taz has been the thing i care about and there so many moments that always make me smile or laugh

Honestly im pretty stone faced at work and people noticed i was happy while i was listening to it im that smiley and giggley and ive had people assume im terribley sad cause of my resting face

Anyways the point of this nonsense

I fucking love The Adventure Zone and wish i had found it earlier tho im grateful that i could listen to all of balance in one go

Its kinda taken over my tumblr and this sort of thing has happened before (tiger x bunny for example) and itll prob pass soon enough tho taz will never leave now so i guess thanks for bearing with me on that front

This show has filled a void in my life and has inspired me to dm again (a thing im not great at but i wanna do it and i want my friends to learn dnd and the wonderfulness that entails)

Also last thing i promise thanks @manaecl for bearing with me messaging him as i listened to it even tho i work overnight and totally messaged him at like 3 am mostly and thanks @wickedspeak for also bearing with my belated fangirling

The best part of this fever dream is I now have a new ship. A lesbian ship between Delphie Diggory (or whatever her last name is in this mess) and one Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way. I can't wait to wake up and tell everyone about my new oc ship.

i’ve been referring to her in my head as delphie dark’ness dementia raven way (occasionally i add “diggory black voldemort” but that gets a bit unwieldy) so technically to me it’s already canon
