Management Feedback
As your company grows, you will undoubtedly begin implementing various HR policies and performance feedback plans. An important component of the feedback loop that some founders forget to consider is the feedback for the executive team itself.
Most startups live and die by the leadership and vision of their founding (and by extension, executive) team. However, the very nature of startups is that most founders have not gone through extensive managerial or organizational growth training; they are learning as they go. As such, you are bound to encounter situations where the founders do not have best practices and may implement subpar policies. Similarly, some startup executives may lack self-awareness for their own faults.
Typical startup management problems include:
culture that’s too relaxed, or conversely…
culture that’s too competitive
poor top down communication
micro management
not enough direction
improper use of time
By implementing upward feedback that extends to the executive team, you help reduce the likelihood that the leadership is just running ahead blindly. You can implement the feedback loop in various ways, including anonymous surveys from the general company but specific feedback by direct reports, or aggregate ratings systems with open comments, etc.
Good luck!
