"Course Planned On Personnel," Montreal Star. May 7, 1943. Page 3. ---- McGill University Head Stresses Training Need ---- Announcement of a new personnel administration evening course, to open May 18, was made at McGill University today. A similar course was given last summer during the day.
The course is being given by the school of commerce under the auspices of the Dominion Government, which defrays the expenses. Companies will nominate members of their staffs to receive the course. Individual applications will not be received due to limitations of time and accommodation, and the necessity for training men already in industry and doing personnel work. "Recent labor developments and their significance for personnel managers," "Special wage problems," "Labor Legislation," "Employe Interest and unrest," "Collective bargaining" will be among the subjects studied.
In announcing the course, Dr. F. Cyril James, principal and vice- chancellor of the university, stated, "The Dominion of Canada has during the past four years put forth a tremendous effort to augment its production of munitions and war supplies. The record of its accomplishments need not be recorded here, because it is common knowledge, but are apt to forget that the industrial effort has increased greatly the need for men who are qualified to undertake the responsibilities of personnel administration. The happiness, and the efficency of any group of workers depends largely upon the skill and wisdom of those who have charge of the factory or the shop.
"In order to facilitate the training of those who are considered suitable for appointment to posts involving the direction and supervision of workers, McGill University offers this course, which has been planned in consultation with the Federal Government. The course will deal with various aspects of Personnel Administration and will be of a practical nature. Papers will be delivered by men who have had long experience in this particular field, and discussion will be promoted to allow the members to obtain answers to their specific problems. Extra meetings may be arranged for certain groups to consider their own problems."
