With your arms full of a large stack of paper, you made your way through the quiet office floor, and to the shred room. This was normal for you. Work from nine in the morning on requested documents, then at six thirty, take your papers to the shred room. Shred said papers, and then take your leave.
Besides the janitors, you were always one of the last people there. You, without any doubt, worked the hardest. You could always hear the whispers from those around you, whether they were jealous, in awe or even those who felt bad.
"Heading out (Y/n)?" Came one of the few who did stay just as long as you
"Yeah, I have to do some laundry, and maybe I'll even read before bed!" You offered a warm smile, thankful for a little chatter to make the silence less pressing.
"I heard a few others went out for drinks, you aren't going to join them?"
You shook your head, "Ah no, I'm not too much of the drinking type. Are you staying much longer?" You set the papers down, looking back to them.
"Just a while longer, I'm working on this promotion deal, the one with the Japan Volleyball Association!" They went on for a moment, talking about how the JVA wanted to have your company design special promotional outfits for one of the top volleyball teams, and then regular day wear based off of those outfits for regular citizens.
You hadn't been fully listening until a certain name came up.
"Ah and that Kuroo Tetsuro! I heard that we might get to meet with him if the deal goes through!"
"Did you say...Kuroo Tetsuro?" You blinked, completely ignoring the rest of the pile of paper
"I did! Isn't that exciting, (y/n)!" They paused, then looked at your expression, "Uh..that is exciting, right?"
For years, Kuroo Tetsuro had been plaguing your mind. You had dreams of him, thoughts, random daydreams and even nightmares. All stemming from that one fateful day.
"(Y/n)?"
You snapped back to reality, shaking your head ever so slightly, "Uh! Yes! It'll be nice to see him again. We actually attended the same highschool, I managed for his team all three years I was there."
Your coworker paused then smiled, "Well then! If the deal goes through, perhaps you can give me some tips to impress him!"
You let out a small laugh and agreed, and with a few parting words, you turned to leave, forgetting about your papers you had to shred.
Once out of the building, you noticed the weather had darkened, and it was beginning to rain. On a good day, you might walk home, otherwise, you bussed home, and it looked to be the latter option today.
Rather mindlessly, you hopped onto the next bus, and found a seat. Ever since the conversation with your coworker, your mind was racing with thoughts of Kuroo.
You'd possibly be seeing him again. For the first time since that day, You'd be seeing him again. You wondered if he remembered. For you, that day was ingrained into your memory. Every little moment, the words spoke, small actions he made, oh and the sky.
You waited in the grassy field of Nekoma High. Just a few days back, your class had graduated. It was bittersweet, as most people you might not get the time to see in your everyday life as you all moved forwards.
In fact, that thought had been the driving force that made you ask Kuroo to meet you here.
While you waited, you stared up to the sky. It was a beautiful day out. The sun would peek out at times, from behind an array of clouds. There weren't so many that it caused gloom, no, it was just right. Just seeing it made you have an extra giddy feeling, that maybe it was a sign that everything would go just right.
You heard steps behind you, and turned around to be greeted by Kuroo's infamous smile, and his low voice as he greeted you.
"Ah! Kuroo hi!"
The memory halted to a stop as the screeching of tires broke your thoughts. Before you knew it, the world turned sideways, and not long after, you blacked out.
When you finally came to, the world around you was abuzz with the sounds of monitors, low voices, and the news being broadcasted in the background.
"You blinked a few times and looked around, trying to recall what had happened but not much had come from it besides you being on the bus home, but given your circumstance, you could take a guess as to the details and spare yourself.
"Oh! (Y/n) you're awake! "
You turned to your left, where your mother stood. Though she definitely didn't look like she had last time you saw her. The glasses she wore were...her old ones ?!
"I thought you got rid of those glasses years ago?" You mumbled, scrunching your face up a bit.
"But I just got them last weekend, you went with me to pick them out," she looked away from you and to the doctor, "Do you think her memory is all messed up?"
You looked between the two of them, but before either could say another word, the door burst open and three figures rushed in.
"Our apologies sir, but a passing nurse said our friend had woken up!" Lev Haiba spoke for the group, while the other two merely ignored the doctor in all regards.
"(Y/n) how do you feel! You can't go around scaring us like that, Yaku nearly had a heart attack,"
There he was, Kuroo Tetsuro. At your bedside, worry in his eyes. To his right stood Kenma, equally as worried but silent.
But...when was the last time anyone from Nekoma had even reached out to you?
"It's been so long! How did you guys even find out about me?" You asked, sitting up slowly and carefully.
As Lev came over, they all three looked to each other, puzzled.
"But (y/n), we all hung out just a few days ago, and then you went home on the bus...you've been here ever since," Kenma tucked a stray strand of hair behind his ear, you noted that it was more blonde than black, like how it was in...in highschool.
Almost frantically, you looked for a phone, any phone, not finding yours, you grabbed the one in Kenma's hand and stared at the time and date.
"Is this a joke." You said blankly, and tapped the screen where it showed the year.
"Boys, why don't you step out for a moment, (Y/n) seems overwhelmed…" your mother ushered them out, offering to buy them food if they walked her to the hospital's cafeteria.
After they left, the doctor proceeded to ask you questions and run a few tests. He was hesitant on releasing you due to your outburst about the year, but you insisted that it was just because you had been through something traumatic and no one had told you right away.
In the end, you were released, but under the promise to come back two more times for check ups. You met back up with your mom and friends, who you promised that you'd hang out with them the next day, since it was still a weekend. And with that, you went home.
You had dinner, washed up and went to lay down, your mother letting you do so after you told her that you were still tired and would be okay on your own for the night.
It was true that you were tired, but as you sat in your bed, staring out the window at the night sky, you couldn't sleep.
What if when you woke up the next morning, it was all a dream? Or what if this was some form of the afterlife? But why would you be back in highschool. Why here? Why now?
If Kenma's phone had shown the right date, then you'd be graduating in a month. And a few days after that...you'd run away from the biggest moment in life that you were supposed to have.
"What's up? Aren't we supposed to go find the others soon?" Kuroo asked, and glanced back up to the sky, where the clouds were getting a bit darker, "It might rain,"
"You still haven't told me what your plans are!"
He brought his attention back to you, pausing, "Well, I'll of course be going back to school for a bit. I'm hoping to stay in the volleyball profession, or around it. Even marketing would be okay with me."
He went on a little longer, saying something about how hopefully Kenma would be okay without him, and the team as well. But none of which he said, involved you.
Were you both as close as you had thought? Were you wrong somewhere down the line?
"What about you, what's next for our gracious manager (y/n)?"
You gave a shorthand answer, unable to meet his eyes all of the sudden. You hadn't even gotten to the part where you were supposed to confess, and yet your heart was breaking.
In the end, it did start to rain. You faked a phone call from your mom and asked Kuroo to tell the others that you couldn't make it after all.
Even after weeks and months had passed since then, you never spoke to anyone from Nekoma. And without you trying to reach out to them, no one reached out to you. Maybe besides the occasional stream invite from Kenma, or Yaku asking if you'd be back to watch a game of Nekoma's with him.
For some reason, you had started to doubt yourself in how close you were to everyone after that day. And in the end, it had been your own downfall.
Unsure of exactly how you got in this position, if you had truly gone back in time, you looked out past the other houses and to the stars, steeling yourself. This time around would be different.
You had one month to either ask Kuroo out like you had planned, or at least just tell him your feelings. That had been one of your biggest regrets the first time around. You were gifted a second chance, or at least you hoped so. You couldn't waste it.
On your dresser, your new phone buzzed. They never did recover much of your belongings from the crash, and since technically the bus was at fault, the company paid for a new phone.
You reached over and grabbed it, seeing an unfamiliar caller ID.
"Hello?"
"(Y/n), I hope I didn't wake you," It was Kuroo. Somehow he had almost always been able to tell when you were thinking of him, and usually when you were he'd find a way to be around.
"No, I haven't gone to bed yet, " you paused, making a mental note to save his number to your contacts, "Something on your mind?"
"Ah, no, I was just checking in on you," his deep voice had always been rather calming to you, and in your tired state you could feel yourself fighting the tiredness.
"Well I appreciate it! I'm sorry if the whole thing worried you or the team."
"I'm sure they'll just be glad to have you back. I know I am, man that could've been more serious (Y/n),"
You paused again, turning away from your window and to the mirror by your door. It was dark so you couldn't really make much out of your reflection.
"I know. I'll probably stay away from the bus for awhile. And I did..uh I do always talk about how walking home would be better for me anyways,"
"Well maybe a few days a week I can walk you home, your house isn't that far from mine,"
From your hands, you dropped the corner of the blanket that you had been holding tightly, "Really? That'd be so kind! You definitely don't have to or anything, I don't want to be an inconvenience or anything,"
"(Y/n) you're never an inconvenience. Besides, I want to, and once I set my mind to something, I won't back down," On the other line, you could tell that he was holding his breath, as if he waited for you to protest more.
"Well...fine. As long as you still have time for studying and down time afterwards! Got it?"
At that he chuckled, the sound making your heartbeat a little faster, "And here I was, thinking that I was making the deal here. Well, you've got a deal!"
"Well, it starts now! I shouldn't keep you up any longer, so then,"
"Have a good night (Y/n), Im..uh, we're all glad that you're alright,"
"Thanks Kuroo, sleep well okay?"
And not long after you exchanged those parting words, you hung up, and laid back down, realizing how tired you suddenly were, sleep came much easier than it had before.
For the next few days, you spent them taking things easy. You accepted any help you could get, not that you really needed it. In this moment, you were technically an adult in your head, and could remember most of what you had already learned, but the help was much appreciated.
Though, as it had been the first time around, managing Nekoma's team was always your favorite part of the day.
"(Y/n), how are you holding up? I can make the boys fill up their own water bottles if needed!" Coach Nekomata grinned at you, as it was your first day back on the court with them.
"That's okay sir! I can handle some water bottles! Let's just hope that Yamamoto doesn't hit me by accident again,"
"It was one time last year !" From where he stood, he shouted back at you, and as one does when distracted, got hit in the chest by a stray ball, seemingly thrown by Yaku but you hadn't paid too much attention.
Since it was your first day back since the bus incident, today's practice wasn't taken as seriously by the boys, and for once they got away with it. By the time it was over, you were left with an odd mix of nostalgia and an overwhelming feeling of happiness. You definitely had days like these the first time around, but you never knew how much you really missed them.
Once it was time, and all the equipment had been put away, you grabbed your bag, and headed for the door, stopping just before it as you turned to face the gym. Most of the boys were still changing, so it was now quiet, the lights dim. You gave a content hum, and started out the door.
"(Y/n)! Wait up! Did you forget already?!"
You jumped slightly, and did a 180°, facing Kuroo, "No! I didn't forget!" A lie, as you do, "I just wanted to wait outside! The air is cool and it feels better than the hot gym!"
He walked closer to you, taking the sides of your face in his hands, and moved your head around, "Mhhm, are you sure the doctors said that your head was still screwed on right?"
You laughed loudly, "Hey! Stop that! My head is on just right," you grabbed his hands and tried to stop him, but Kuroo was still pretty strong, and freed one of his hands, instantly ruffling your hair, "I'm not too sure! We might have to take a better look, maybe they replaced you with a robot,"
"Or maybe I'm an alien, and you better release my upper body piece before I bring out my lazer gun!" You made a laser sound, or the best one that you could manage, and he let go immediately, then dramatically fell to the ground, golding his stomach.
"Hey you two, start heading home before it gets any darker, and Kuroo, get off the ground, " Nekomata shook his head and readjusted his bag, taking his own leave.
"Yes coach"
After a beat of silence, you snickered, then held your hand out to Kuroo, helping him up.
He took it grateful and got standing, taking a moment to dust himself off before nodding with his head to the road, "shall we?"
The walk home was nice, the two of you joking around as usual, nothing ever fell short and occasionally you could've swore that your hands brushed up against each other.
But of course everything comes to an end, you had reached your destination, home sweet home.
"Well this is it Kuroo, thank you again for walking me home!" You bowed slightly, only to be met with his hand bopping you gently on your head.
"You know that you don't need to do that. " he paused, then gave a small sigh, "I'll be off then, make sure you get a good rest! And a good dinner too!"
"I will! Don't you worry!" You watched him turn and walk back the way you came, then shouted, "Oh and text me when you get home so I know you got there safely,"
He turned halfway, raising his hand in the air and waved, signaling that he would do just that.
You waited until he was out of sight before going inside, your mom waiting for you just beyond the entrance.
"(Y/n), how was the walk? Are you feeling okay? Nothing too much for you? Were things at practice okay?"
"The walk was fine! We took it slow, I'm feeling fine, so far I think everything is the right amount of okay for me and practice was actually really nice," you rattled off the answers as you slipped off your shoes and set your bag down.
She let out a small sigh of relief, "I'm glad to hear so. Please make sure you tell me if anything is too much. You had a traumatic accident, you need to take it slow,"
You looked back to her, seeing the worry in her eyes, and the way she carefully made sure to not frown.
"I will, I promise,"
The next few days passed quickly, you would go to school, try just as hard as you did the first time around, then you'd go to practice and every other night Kuroo would walk you home.
By the time Saturday came around, you were sure that this was some sort of cruel and unusual punishment. Was being a teenager always this hard? It felt like your classes were even more difficult and you had technically already finished these classes ages ago.
So needless to say you were pretty drained. However, the pinging of your phone at an alarmingly fast rate meant that the boys were up to something, or planning something.
You rolled over onto your stomach and picked up your phone, reading over the chat once it settled.
After a quick pause, you recieved a text from Kuroo saying that they were already on their way over. You hopped out of bed and moved to your closet, pulling out a comfy sweater and then some jeans.
Once dressed, you dealt with your hair and put on socks, grabbed your backpack and put in your phone charger, an extra shirt incase you got warm and then an umbrella.
By the time you were done, the two were already at your house. You ran downstairs, threw on your shoes and yelled a quick goodbye to your mom before heading outside.
Kenma, who didn't look particularly happy to be out in the rain, was hogging the umbrella to himself, leaving Kuroo to the rain.
From your bag you grabbed the umbrella, popped it it open and rushed to his side, "Hey! You'll catch a cold!"
"Well Kenma wouldn't share his with me," he looked to his best friend, sticking his tongue out at him.
"You're too tall, I would have gotten wet." Was all kenma replied with.
"Well now you have my umbrella and I," you chimed in, giving them a slight warning glance, as if to tell them not to argue.
The rest of the walk was in gentle jokes and the occasional comfortable silence. But of course when you reached Lev's place, both he and Yaku were waiting outside, smiling like two idiots.
