"For  a  moment  there  I  thought  you  would  not  show  up."  A  smile  spreads  through  Matt's  lips  despite  the  gentle  jab.  He  could  recognize  Bucky's  heartbeat  from  a  block  away,  something  about  the  familiarity  and  the  way  he  is  sure  him  being  a  super  soldier  makes  his  beat  have  a  distinct  drumb.  It's  soothing  for  him  in  many  ways,  now  more  than  ever.  "Don't  tell  me  you  were  nervous.  We  been  dating  for  a  long  time  now."  

He  reaches  over  to  where  the  heartbeat  is  heard,  a  hand  finally  touching  a  side  of  a  jacket  and  then  pulling  himself  closer,  eyes  hiding  under  the  red  tinted  glasses.  Matt  knows  that  Bucky  prefers  them  without  them,  but  sometimes  it's  easier  to  keep  them  on,  when  he  is  feeling  too  self  conscious.  "I'm  suing  whoever  is  keeping  you  away  for  this  long.  And  I'm  a  great  lawyer,  you  know  I  would  win."  The  vigilante  points  out,  lips  only  growing  into  a  bigger  smile  as  he  finally  feels  at  ease  now  that  the  beating  heart  is  under  his  hand.  "Hey."

She could barely hear him, his voice sounded as though it was coming from miles away instead of a few feet. Jess had Veranke pinned to the floor, with an arm raised, both fists glowing bright green from her venom blasts. She could feel the venom, the electricity, coursing through her, and that feeling spurred her on. But as Jessica raised her fist even higher to deliver the killing blow, she used the hand connected to Veranke already to shock her just enough to knock her out instead.

Jessica had never killed anyone before. The first mission Hydra sent her on was to kill Nick Fury — and all that did was cause her to turn away from them and go her own way. Though she had been trained as an assassin, she had never taken it to this level.

But this was Veranke. The Skrull that ruined her life, kidnapped her for years, sent her army down to kidnap and impersonate her friends. All she wanted to do was have that bitch pay for what she had done. And as Jessica stared down at Veranke’s unconscious form beneath her, all she could feel was rage. Her vision turned red, her fist crackling with electricity again, and she punched Veranke in the face before pushing away from her.

Bucky knew what it was like to take a life, and so Jess figured she’d hear him out. “And why don’t I?” the voice that spoke didn’t sound like it came from her - she felt so detached from this moment. She turned back around to kick Veranke’s leg — not hard, but enough to vent a little more of her anger out.

ANOTHER  DAY  ANOTHER  FIGHT.  It  seems  he  is  very  prone  to  to  those  these  days,  every  day.  He  is  told  to  stop  doing  that  but  this  time  it  was  to  try  and  help  a  lady  get  away  from  some  nasty  people,  and  well,  apparently,  that  earned  him  a  beating  behind  another  alley  with  bucky  finding  him  shortly  after  and  he  can  tell  he  has  a  scolding  prepared.  But  he  doesn’t  say  anything  until  they  reach  the  apartment,  and  he  can  breathe  at  ease  knowing  he  is  at  home  (  he  feels  bucky’s  fresh  cologne  and  wonders  if  he  had  a  date  that  date,  if  he  interrupted  it,  the  thought  aches  ).  Shirt  is  removed,  to  help  revise  the  bruises  and  the  pain  he  feels  and  to  see  everything  is  well  and  good.  

It’s  mostly  on  his  face,  and  he  can  handle  it,  busted  lip  and  bruising  cheek  and  eye.  But  Bucky’s  touch  is  caring  and  precise,  he  already  knows  where  to  pressure  or  not,  likely,  due  to  his  mother’s  teachings.  After  his  mother  died,  it  was  on  Bucky’s  side  to  take  care  of  him  (  he  feels  guilty  about  that,  as  he  watches  his  friend’s  fixed  up  hair  and  definitely,  he  had  a  date  ).  “You  know  I’m  fine,  Buck.  You  don’t  need  to  worry  so  much  about  me.  Ouch.  .  .that  hurt.”  Not  helping  his  case  there,  baby  blues  open  as  he  looks  back  at  bucky,  sitting  beside  him,  close  and  personal  and  he  tries  to  wonder  gaze  elsewhere.  

Knees  bump  to  one  another  and  he  falls  quiet  when  head  is  tilted  to  patch  up  the  cut  on  his  cheek.  “I  had  him  on  the  ropes.”

“You  don’t  have  to  talk  if  you  don’t  want  to,  you  know.  I  know  it  has  been.  .  .hard.“  and  well,  there  is  a  lot  to  talk  about  and  she  doesn’t  wish  to  overwhelm  him.  not  at  that  moment.  it  has  been  years  since  the  red  room,  years,  since  they  had  been  together  in  all  the  sense  of  the  world  (  forbidden  and  dangerous,  he  had  been  that  one  light  in  her  life  during  those  dark  days,  as  little  as  it  lasted,  she  could  never  forget  him  ).  she  does  hand  him  a  cup  of  coffee,  a  drink  might  be  more  accurate  but  it  wouldn’t  surge  any  effects  on  either  of  them.  natasha  smiles,  briefly,  stepping  closer  to  where  he  is  sitting.  words  are  loosing  a  meaning  in  the  way  she  tries  to  comfort  him  or  approach  this,  and  in  the  end,  it’s  blunt  honest.  “do  you  remember  us?  back  then?”

there’s something wrong.

she can feel it in her gut when she reaches for the doorknob to the apartment. whatever it is leaves her hand hovering over the metal like a ghost as bucky makes his way up the steps behind her with the groceries. and then she hears it; one of the kitchen chairs scraping against the scuffed kitchen tile; someone is in there.

first, her thoughts drift to rocket- he might have let himself in, but then again, he’s off-world. inside, she hears more shifting; that squeaky board in the living room. whoever has stepped on it is much too big to be their friend.

she looks up at bucky, eyes wide and unable to hide the lingering fear, eyes that seem to silently say, “ what is going on? ”

TREATMENT  GOES  SMOOTHLY.  somehow,  her  rage  is  there  but  quelled.  she  can  breathe,  she  can  live.  Body  isn’t  ripped  apart  over  and  over  and  hurting  over  and  over.  a  hand  reaches,  she  doesn’t  mean  to,  but  perhaps,  the  prospect  of  being  able  to  finally  touch  someone  is  something  that  endears  her.  Scott  Long  had  been  the  one  to  give  her  her  greatest  wish  and  for  that,  she  is  grateful.  Hand  reach  to  his  shoulder,  and  hand  doesn’t  move  through,  doesn’t  phases  or  go  through  him.  Her  suit  is  no  longer  needed  to  reach  and  touch  and  she  breaks  a  gentle  smile,  softness  in  green  eyes.  

She  holds  emotions  in;  somehow,  she  doesn’t  want  to  be  seen  as  vulnerable  or  weak  in  that  moment.  “You  don’t  know  if  this  will  be  permanent.  What  if  you  no  longer  can  go  into  the  quantum  realm?”  Ava  questions  in  the  end,  hand  removed  from  his  shoulder,  as  if  her  touch  could  burn  him.  “Your  daughter.  .  .you  shouldn’t  risk  getting  lost  in  there  again  for  me,  when  you  have  her.”
