What Am I Reading?
One of my biggest goals of 2025 was to read more books and i've been really happy to read again!!
Possible spoilers ahead!!
Actively reading:
Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma! (01/11/2026)
Finished Books (2026)
23. Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir (01/02/2026-01/08/2026)
i had this book on my list for a few months and it was a really good start to my reading year!!!! i really liked it. some parts were a bit slow for me but i enjoyed the whole journey and it got me in the feels at the end. so good!
24. A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers (01/10/2026)
short and sweet, and maybe i would have enjoyed it more if *certain american things* weren't currently happening to make me feel so upset. but it was a fine book.
Finished Books (2025):
1. The Vampire Lestat, Anne Rice (01/2025)
2. The Poppy War, R. F. Kuang (01/2025)
3. The Secret History, Donna Tartt, (02/17/2025)
oh my god so good i'm so sad it's over
4. The Dragon Republic, R. F. Kuang, (2/17/2025-3/22/2025)
this was horrific and i'm so anxious for what comes next)
5. The Burning God, R. F. Kuang, (03/22/25-6/06/2025)
HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO MEEEEEEE SO GOOD
6. Patricia Wants to Cuddle, Samantha Allen, (06/07/2025)
7. Babel, R. F. Kuang, (06/08/2025-06/25/2025)
ITS SO OVER AAAAGGGHHHHHHH STOP BREAKING ME INTO PIECES KUANG!!!!!!!
8. The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. Le Guin (6/27/2025-07/02/2025)
my friend mailed me this book to try out, it reminded her of me 🫶 this was very different from what i've read so far this year but after getting thru half the book, half a book of set-up, it was very very enthralling and i liked it by the end!!
9. The Starving Saints, Caitlin Starling (07/02/2025-07/05/2025)
this book was alright until i got to the halfway point and thought "what?? how? where is my 'oh shit here we go' moment??? after that it totally lost me and was pretty boring most the way thru. the characters also annoyed me, they felt so empty. and there were too many times where i was confused by the writing and had no idea who was standing where or who was doing what, really disappointed!!
10. Last Night at the Telegraph Club, Malinda Lo (07/06/2025-07/11/2025)
this book hit so close to my little transgender home :(((((( if i had this book as a kid it would have meant so much!!! even tho it doesn't focus on young trans kids, the queer experience of not being accepted and fearing the change in your family's opinion of you is universal. it reminded me of when i first came out to my mom. i'm heart broken 😭😭😭😭 this was so good 😞
11. The Spirit Bares Its Teeth, Andrew Joseph White (07/12/2025-07/13/2025 i finished it in 12 hours lol)
i'd say this was good!! and triggering!!!!!!!!!!! not necessarily in a bad way, but it sure had me thinking about my transness!!!! a good little read if u want some insight into the mental anguish being closeted or denied your humanity lol. thought it was a bit bland and on the nose too much sometimes, but it was alright and a quick read. but read the triggers!!
12. Inkheart, Cornelia Funke (07/13/2025-07/22/2025)
This book was so fun and sweet!! Very much can see why i liked this as a kid. wholesome, curious as to what could happen in the rest of the series.
13. A Love Song for Ricki Wilde, Tia Williams (07/23/2025-07/24/2025)
This book was so sweet and funny, very camp, i liked it a lot! the turn it took was not at all what i was expecting which honestly took me out of it for a couple chapters, hated it lol but after i settled a little more into it i got brought back. the last few chapters had me cry a little TWICE!! so damn emotional and overall an extremely sweet story.
14. Clever Little Thing, Helen Echlin (07/25/2025-07/28/2025)
Honestly this was meh. only felt a little exciting after i got more than halfway thru the book, and i thought the MC was annoying and insufferable. i don't really understand why the only non white characters in this book had to be the ones who suffered the most but were sidelined the entire story, and the MC never gave a damn about them at all. she felt so fake. really bleh book for me
15. In My Dreams I Hold a Knife, Ashley Winstead (08/29/2025-08/30/2025)
i read this entire book in one sitting basically and oh my god it was so good. so much drama and mystery and conflicted characters written so well!! really really liked this
16. Midnight is the Darkest Hour, Ashley Winstead (09/02/2025-09/04/2025)
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE BOOK OF THE YEAR I THINK SO GOOD SO AMAZING I LOVE YOU ASHLEY WINSTEAD
17. So Thirsty, Rachel Harrison (09/06/2025-09/17/2025)
This was a silly book lol it was fun, i think only bc i went in not expecting much (the title made me think it was gonna be silly, and a lot hornier than it was lmao) the rest of my book club did not like this book but i enjoyed it for what it was! goofy but fun
18. The Haar, David Sodergren (10/08/2025-10/11/2025)
that was quite insane lol. i'm not a gore fan but this book was real good! it almost made me cry a few times?? and the ending was very satisfying. had a good classic slasher flick vibe to it but with a gnarly ocean creature
19. Katabasis, R. F. Kuang (09/05/2025-10/18/2025)
sadlyyyyyyyy this is my least fav book from Kuang so far. it was good, but i found myself feeling pretty bored through a lot of the middle section. i liked a lot of the character flashbacks, didn't like how much the magic was explained to me. we weren't really learning anything along with the characters, rather it felt like it was just explaining things to me directly. BUT i did like the ending, and the character interactions, and Alice's internal struggle for her time period too. overall just okay for me with some good parts. i'm glad the ending was satisfying enough otherwise it would have hurt worse lmao
20. The Woods All Black, Lee Mandelo (10/19/2025-10/21/2025)
very queer, very good. wasn't expecting the horny aspects of it but i was happy with the ending!! need more books featuring trans men <3
21. The Haunting of Rookward House, Darcy Coates (10/21/2025-10/24/2025)
my summary of this book is basically "i've seen this movie before" lmao. maybe in 2017, when it was written, it would have seemed more original, but it was really basic and uninspired. and the writing being very step by step didn't help. had a fine time until about the last quarter of the book, when the ghost was revealed. seen her design a million times in a million mid horror movies! but i'll try more of her books.
22. What Hunger by Catherine Dang (10/25/2025-10/28/2025)
very sad and really good with the way it describes grief as a teenager, even if it's thru a cannibal lens lol. not what i was wanting to read at the time but still interesting
DNF:
1. Dead Collectives, Isaac Fellman (first DNF of 2025) (sorry i really did not like the writing style and it was extremely confusing)
2. Transcendent Kingdom, Yaa Gyasi (it was good but wasn't interested in finishing it)
3. Queen of the Damned, Anne Rice (i'm just not interested and if i decide to pick it up again i'll get it from the library. donating a lot of books and this is one of them! haven't picked it up since january)
4. Sunburn, Chloe Michelle Howarth (07/29/2025) idk just wasn't vibing with how the writing was i think. read maybe 60 pages and just really wasn't hitting for me. i don't normally stop so fast buuuuuut yeah, not for me sadly
5. The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones (11/01/2025) just couldn't get into it but i want to try going back at some point (and i was very very busy at the time too)
