Artifact Tuesday: Scandinavian Mangle Board

For the last 2 weeks we have been exclusively working with Lillian Wineman’s collection.  Lillian was an interesting woman who grew up in North Dakota at the turn of twentieth century.  Throughout her life Lillian collected an amazing array of artifacts.  This gem is only one piece of her impressive collection. 

  This object is a Scandinavian Mangle Board used for ironing.  This object also had another use.  In Norway (where Lillian’s mother immigrated from) these mangle boards are a sort of engagement gift to young women.  A man would carve and paint a beautiful board for a young lady; if she accepted the gift they were to be married.

This mangle board can now be seen with Lillian’s collection on the 1st floor of the museum!
