I honestly can't believe I hadn't read this book earlier. This is definitely an impactful book written from the point of view of young Hispanic girl who has moved onto Mango Street. Esperanza is ashamed of her name, her home, and her culture that dislikes strong women. Mango Street is told in a series of poems that don't give a complete narrative but draw a picture all the same. We follow along as she navigates friendship, boys, and trying to avoid becoming a woman looking out from behind a window. While the writing style was hard to get into at first, I actually ended up liking how it worked for the book. The narrator is young, she's not going to have an eloquently written and remembered story that follows all the grammar rules. Overall, I liked this book and I definitely think everyone should read it at least once.

tldr; A powerful and impactful story of a young girl learning what it means to be a woman and striving to escape her residency of Mango Street.
