Metro North From the Bear Mountain Bridge

In the first image the train is between Manitou and the bridge, with Sugarloaf visible in the distance. In the second photograph, with the train going away, one can see Peekskill in the distance.

Just looked up the locomotive here: it's a Siemens SC-42DM in charge of the train. This is the model that will be replacing the General Electric P32AC-DMs over time. In the spirit of the time-comparison diptychs, I do have a shot of a Metro North train powered by FL9s at the same spot as the second image here.

This long stretch along the east side of the Hudson River makes up a portion of New York Central's Water Level Route, which is another theme of this series of posts.

The EMD FL9

In a series of posts, let's look a this unique unit, designed specifically for Grand Central Terminal and the tunnels leading to it (under Park Avenue from 97th all the way down to 42nd Street). Please see the first of three posts for details of this unique design built by EMD.

In this third post we first have a going-away shot of a Metro North commuter train kicking up the fallen leaves at Manitou. One can see the Bear Mountain Bridge in the distance. Metro North always ran with the locomotives on the north end of their trains, pulling when northbound, and pushing when southbound.

The second image, of a New York bound Amtrak train, was taken from the top of Bear Mountain itself, on the west side of the Hudson River; Bear Mountain Bridge can be seen in the foreground. The train has just blown through Manitou, which is between Peekskill and Garrison.

While we're here, let me put in an image that actually came just prior to the first one above: that Metro North train approaching Manitou.
