written in response to this article   this article’s a double bind. the counterculture is/was a legitimate movement, which only then becomes subject to the efforts of the establishment to derail or control. same goes for christianity, in fact. the empire persecuted christians for hundreds of years until it managed to sustain itself & at the same time stamp out the revolutionary aspects of true religion by adopting it & redefining it & then stamping out any opposition by deeming it "heresy" (now imagine a future in which the state does the same of the countercultural movement... that's interesting if disturbing sci fi) so while pointing out the governmental links to the countercultural movement it fails to address its true motivations & thereby robs the counterculture of legitimacy & importance by painting it solely as a product of the state & not an independent development. it paints the state's reactions & efforts to control as the sole causes of the movement & therefore fails to address the movement in its own terms. this is patently false, hence why i call this a double bind (it exposes the "truth" behind the "truth" but instead supplements a more convenient lie to keep you in the snare, sort of what the article claims about plato's cave but which in fact it does itself) the houseboat summit that they link to is incomplete, btw. seems like a great discussion but it's edited to take out chunks here & there here’s the full version
