Since 2015 I have always been intrigued by one particular board game; that of T.I.M.E. Stories. I’ll just write TS to refer to it because I think typing out periods is tedious. But TS is honestly an odd board game; they probably got the idea from the Legacy series of games (Risk Legacy, Pandemic Legacy, etc.). However, what they have supposedly done is create a much shorter version of this play style; only promising about four to five hours of game
play. Sure, they have new releases that come out occasionally where you go back in a certain time period, but only a few of these releases have really excited me; others I would just as soon pass on.
But paying a full board game price for something you can’t pick back up again seems about as popular as zucchini is to my kids, but I may just like the taste of TS. You never know unless you take a bite. Of course, by then it might be too late and vomit may just be on the table, but at least we have paper towels and handy wipes these days. I heard you can’t return the game though, so I guess the analogy fails. Here are some pics.
What first strikes me about this new board game is the amazing smell. You don’t hear too many people talk about the smells of freshly opened board games, but there’s something intrinsically beautiful about the way they draw you back to opening some of your favorite things. It’s not unlike the smell of a Christmas tree for me now as an adult. I’ll move on about the smell. I love the crispness of the white all over the board. It seems these days most games are fairly dark, so it has this going for it.
The game board itself folds into a small thick grid of six sections; and can I just tell you it is huge? Like Battlelore huge, only really white and clinical. I haven’t popped out the card board pieces yet because, well, I’d rather not go searching for them underneath my couch in my garage, but yes, there are a lot of pieces. Good Lord there are a lot of pieces to punch out.
Note to self: though you may be excited about the prospects of opening the game, pay attention to cards that read in bold “Do not open before reading the rules.” I did. I probably shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t resist. It’s like those people who keep pulling on the doors to open them when the sign in front of them says “push.” I’m a moron.
So I have stickers, dice with skulls on them, and super creepy cards. On second thought, this game just took a radical turn for the dark; being all in white could be like putting a dress on a pig. I mean, check out those cards! Are you kidding me? What’s that dude smiling at? He should be running from his life like the investigators from Cthulhu. And how the heck you are supposed to say “Cthulhu?” I had to look it up online and I’m still confused. I can’t even say it. Moving on.
The instructions seem pretty straight forward, the game seems to be eerily dark, the artwork is absolutely stunning, and the cards are clear that you aren’t supposed to open them before reading the rules. I’ll have to make a note of that. I have no idea what I have gotten myself in to, but just opening this box makes me want to start tonight; if only there was a solo scenario in this game. If only my wife wasn’t already asleep to enjoy it with me. If only she didn’t think I was crazy about my love of board games. If only she even tolerated them. Oh well; hope this helps!
