A gentle hand on your lower back pulled you from your sleep slowly. There was an ache between your thighs, and the previous night came rushing back to you. Your cheeks flushed at the memory of Joel over you, your bodies joined together.
“Mornin’, ‘mega,” Joel said quietly before pressing a kiss to your forehead. You squirmed in his arms for a moment before calming down again, too comforted by his grip around you to put any real effort into getting away from him. And, after all, you had been the one to initiate the sex last night. “You feel like breakfast?”
“Mm… that sounds good.” Joel moved to leave the bed, but you pulled yourself closer before he could. “I can wait a few minutes,” you whispered. Joel hummed in response, his arm tightening around you. You laid like that for a while, listening to the sound of each other’s breathing. While you weren’t sure what Joel was thinking, you were certain that you’d never felt such peace since before the outbreak.
After a while, though, your stomach began to grumble, prompting Joel to pull himself from your arms. You let out a tiny whine when he did, but didn’t move to get out of bed. Instead you watched him get dressed, admiring how well built he was before he was clothed again. He looked back at you before leaving the room, a knowing look in his eye that had you blushing again.

About two weeks later, you were more excited than you had been in the past three months. You were finally going to be allowed outside. With chaperones of course, but that didn’t damper your mood.
You, Joel, and five of the other alphas were going on a scavenging trip to a nearby town, a little less than a day’s walk away. Your old backpack was passed to you by Joel right before you had left the compound, and you were happy to see that it had been mended by someone since you’d last seen it. You were also given your bow and a quiver full of arrows, though Joel had instructed you to only use them when necessary, and to try and stay hidden if any trouble befell the group. You agreed, but only because you had to.
There would be no hesitation on your end to take out an infected before it could reach anyone in the pack, especially Joel. You’d only admitted it to yourself so far, but you cared for the man. Your alpha. The thought alone made you smile, though you quickly wiped it from your face when you noticed one of the other alphas staring at you.
You’d left only an hour ago, and you were quickly reminded of the hardships of living on the road, constantly searching for the next safe place to hole up for a day or two before moving on. The pavement beneath you was cracked, little blades of grass and weeds growing throughout it. You were thankful that you’d spent all those hours training while inside the compound, instead of letting your stamina decay.
Joel walked beside you, his hand occasionally brushing yours. Each little contact put a blush on your face, and that continued the entire walk to the nearby town. You could tell that he was pleased he had such an effect on you, the hint of a smile he wore more than enough to let you know.
The town was deserted, and by the time you reached it, your feet were aching. There was no sign of infected, though you knew that meant little in this world. Infected could hide anywhere and everywhere, waiting for one moment of missing attention to spring forth and take your life. The anticipation had you drawing your bow, and arrow nocked and at the ready as you scanned the abandoned buildings.
The alphas around you followed suit, and soon the seven of you were moving quickly through the main strip of town, making sure the street was clear of danger. You saw no infected and no signs of life, both of which helped to calm your heart.
Infected were dangerous, yes, but humans were worse. Who knew what they would do with you, especially as an omega…
A flash of annoyance went through you when you remembered that you were here because of said threat, but then you looked at Joel, whose attention was wholly on the surrounding area as he scanned for possible threats, and the feeling melted away. His hazel eyes met yours for a brief moment and he gave you a small smile, then went back to surveying the streets around you.
“Alright, boys, we’ll clear each building, then choose one to hole up in for the night,” Joel instructed, then pointed at one of the buildings, an old bakery if you were reading the sign right. Two of the alphas entered, moving quietly while the rest of you waited outside for a moment. Once they gave a signal, the other three alphas that you didn’t know well were moving inside, bows at the ready. “We’re gonna stay out here until it’s clear, sweetheart. I don’t want to put you in any more danger than you need to be.”
You rolled your eyes at him and said, “I’ll be fine, Joel. I was surviving on my own until a few months ago, y’know.”
“I know, I know. I just can’t help it,” Joel said, and strangely, you knew what he meant. Your skin crawled at the thought of Joel being hurt, no matter how it happened, and you were certain that you would cry if he was injured on this trip.
“Alright… But I’m going to help when we go into the motel,” you said, pointing at the largest structure in town, a few blocks down from where you were now. Joel opened his mouth to protest, but you cut him off, “Uhn-uh, I’m helping. That building is too big for the five of them to clear quick enough to get settled before sundown. I won’t take no for an answer.”
Joel narrowed his eyes for a moment before he smiled at you. “Alright, princess, but you’re sticking with me the entire time.”
“I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
“The building’s clear!” one of the alphas, Jackson, you thought, said as the other four followed him out of the bakery. “Onto the next one, boys.”
You and Joel followed the group as they went to the building next door, proceeding as they had with the last one. Two went in before giving a signal through the glass, and the other three followed. That’s how the entire town went, up until you hit the motel. So far, none of you had seen a single infected, a blessing in your eyes. But as you approached the motel, an uneasy feeling fell over you. Like you were being watched.
You turned to tell Joel about the feeling, and were startled to see a stalker come around the corner of the motel, running up behind Joel - you aimed a shot quickly, your arrow sinking into the infected’s eye just as it was about to reach for your alpha.
"Shit," Joel muttered as he spun to look at the body, whistling to the alphas that were a few paces ahead of you. “Be careful, boys. Watch each other in there.”
The five of them went through the front door as a group, then Jackson came back outside to report to Joel. “We think there’s five stalkers in there, boss. You and your omega should stay out here,” he said quietly before rejoining his fellows.
“I’m going in, Joel. We’ll take them out faster that way,” you said, moving to the door without waiting for Joel’s permission. He swore behind you but didn’t argue, knowing that the currently setting sun could mean death for all of you if you didn’t clear this building in time to choose a place to camp.
Thankfully the motel was only one story, making it easy enough to navigate without losing track of the others. You stalked forward on silent feet, followed by an equally quiet Joel, his own bow watching your back. As the others cleared the first two rooms, you moved to the third, stepping carefully through the doorway. There was a bed pushed against the far wall, covered in dirty clothes and blankets, but no infected. You stepped further inside just to be sure, but there was still nothing.
Joel was waiting in the hall when you stepped back out, his eyes on the far end of the motel, watching something. “Think you can make that shot?” he asked in a whisper, pointing at a slightly moving mass at the end of the hall. You looked more closely, a shiver running through you at the sight of the stalker, watching the both of you. You raised your bow and aimed, loosing your arrow and shooting the stalker in the eye. It fell to the ground, dead. “Good girl,” Joel murmured before moving forward to the next room. The other alphas came up behind you, informing Joel that they’d taken out two more stalkers in the first rooms. That likely meant two to go.
You moved carefully behind Joel, watching every angle that you could with another arrow nocked, the bowstring taut as you held it at the ready. Joel cleared the next room while the group moved up to the last two rooms left.
Joel reentered the hallway, eyes going wide when he looked behind you. He raised his bow, but was too late as the stalker barreled into you, pushing you to the ground as it snapped at your neck. You struggled to throw it off of you, then felt the sickly warm spray of blood as Joel’s machete slid through it’s neck, its head rolling onto your arm then the ground. The body was pushed aside and you were pulled up by strong hands, your alpha staring at you, terrified, as he checked you for any wounds. He didn’t waste a minute in pulling you out of the motel, telling the others to hurry up as he did so.
The sun was nearly set when you left the motel, and strong arms wrapped around your middle, pulling you in for a bone-crushing hug.
“Joel, I’m fine,” you murmured, but didn’t pull away. It was nice to have the comfort of his touch, to have it wash away the fear that was still beating in your heart.
“Just let me hold you,” Joel said in your ear, his arms still tight around you. You could feel the machete he’d wielded against your back, sense how alert Joel still was. “About time,” he said when the motel door swung open, all five alphas returning to the outdoors without a scratch on them. Joel finally loosened his grip on you, though you stayed in his arms. “I think the bookstore we cleared earlier will be the best place to hole up for the night. Everyone agree?” You heard murmurs of agreement, and Joel nodded his head. “Alright, let’s get going before the light is gone.”
You finally forced yourself from Joel’s arms so that you could walk the block back to the bookstore, your hand laced with his. The light was fading quickly as the sun set over the horizon, the sky going from bright orange to a dusky purple as the windows and door of the building were secured.
Joel followed you to the back of the store as you looked for a good place to sleep, and you could just barely make out the genre marker for the section that you chose for the night. Funny, that you’d chosen the romance section without trying when you knew you would be sharing a sleeping bag with Joel tonight. “This is the spot.”
“Looks good, princess.” Joel set to laying out the sleeping bag while you squinted at the titles on the shelf, struggling to read them in the low light. “C’mon, ‘mega,” Joel said after a few minutes, and you turned to make out his form, already inside of the sleeping bag. You couldn’t help the smile that slid onto your face as you stripped off your bloodied shirt. It was tucked into your backpack after you pulled a fresh one out, one of Joel’s flannels that you’d grown rather attached to. You dressed quickly and shimmied into the sleeping bag, a tight fit with how broad Joel was, but the feeling of him pressed so closely to you more than made up for it.
Snuggled so tightly together, you were reminded of the last two weeks that you’d spent with the man. Your alpha. Every night, you’d fallen asleep in his arms, similarly to how you were tonight. Almost every day, you’d had some form of sexual contact with Joel, and whether it was him pleasuring you or coupling, there was always a smile on your face afterwards as you basked in the presence of your alpha.
So quickly, you had fallen for the male you were pressed against, his warmth keeping you from feeling the still bitter chill that accompanied early spring. And you couldn’t find it in yourself to be more than mildly annoyed at how the whole situation had come about.
You were curious as to what Joel was feeling about the whole thing - did he see you as his omega, someone precious to him? Or were you simply an omega who happened to fall right into his lap? The questions gnawed at you until you fell asleep, comforted by the steady sound of Joel’s breathing.
You woke feeling slightly more rested, though you had woken frequently whenever any small noise happened near enough to you and Joel. Already, you were missing your bedroom back at the compound, missing the security that you felt while you slept.
Joel was awake, his thumb brushing over your hip in a rhythmic pattern. “Mornin’, ‘mega,” he whispered as he pressed a kiss to the crown of your head. “Sleep well?”
“Well enough with you to protect me,” you said with a giggle. “Should we join the others?”
“After you pick out the books you want.” You perked up at that, glancing around the secluded area you had chosen. There were plenty of books to choose from, and the majority of them looked to be mostly damage free, a rarity after the past decade. You shimmied out of the sleeping bag, pleased at the way Joel’s breath hitched at the sight of you in his flannel, exactly what you had hoped for.
It didn’t take you long to fill your backpack halfway with new romance books, leaving enough space for any other supplies that you might need to carry home.
Home. It was weird to think of having a home again, after so many years on the road. But you weren’t too proud to admit that the compound had quickly become your home, with Joel by your side.
“Pick another one, sweetheart. I don’t want you getting bored,” Joel said, nudging you towards the nearest bookshelf before rolling up the sleeping bag and reattaching it to his pack. With a dusting of a blush on your cheeks, you chose another book, this one promising to be a forbidden romance between a duke and his late cousin’s widow - needless to say, you were excited to read it once you were home.
“Alright, I’m done,” you said as you tucked the last book inside of your bag and buckled it shut.
“C’mon then,” Joel said, grabbing your hand and leading you back to the front of the store. The other alphas were mostly ready, a couple of them still rolling up their sleeping bags and securing them to their bags. You all shared a meal of dried venison and hard tack, washed down by a small amount of the water that you had left in your canteens. By the time you had finished, Jackson was standing at the ready, his bow already drawn.
“I think we should target the garden supply and cookware stores. Fergus has been bitching about needing new pots and pans for a few months now, and Tally said that we need new gardening cans. Plus there’s the gun shop, which’ll probably be picked clean by now but there could be something left,” Jackson said, his eyes on Joel.
“Sounds like a plan. Y/N and I will take the gun shop, the rest of you can decide between yourselves. No fighting, and keep your eyes open.”
“Yes, boss,” the five men said in unison, leaving the store once the door had been unbarred. Three alphas headed in one direction, while two went in the opposite, heading to their respective stores. You were impressed that they’d decided without a word shared between them, as if they had done this a thousand times before.
They probably have, you thought to yourself with a roll of your eyes, and then you looked to Joel. “Shall we?” Joel nodded his head and led you out of the bookstore and to the gun shop, only a block down. You dropped his hand in favor of your bow, an arrow nocked and at the ready as your eyes swept over the road and buildings in front of you. The last thing you needed was another stalker trying to attack you or Joel.
As Jackson had suspected, the gun store had been picked clean aside from a few tiny things. There was one box of bullets, completely full, behind the back counter, hidden in a cardboard box. Your other finds were a bottle of gun oil and a large hunting knife, both of which were also hidden in the box. You were surprised to see all three goodies sitting together, and figured that someone must have put them there some time ago.
You heard a whistle from outside and looked to Joel, who seemed to know exactly what that whistle meant. “Stay low,” he instructed, lowering himself into a crouch as he made his way to the front of the store. You followed close behind, your bowstring drawn and ready for whatever was coming your way.
You could see Jackson and two other alphas walking down the street with their weapons drawn, shoulders tense. The other two alphas were also heading back in the direction of the bookstore, looking to converge with the other three.
“Should we meet them?” you asked, and were surprised by the shake of Joel’s head.
“Give ‘em a minute.”
You did as he said, watching the group carefully. They looked around carefully for whatever threat they’d sensed, then whistled a different note that had Joel’s shoulders relaxing slightly. You waited for Joel to stand before you followed suit, walking out of the gun store and back into the shining spring sunlight.
An arrow whizzed through the air, finding its mark in Joel’s left shoulder. He grunted in pain and you screamed, rushing to him before looking around the area to find the person who dared to attack your alpha. There - you aimed your bow at the head peeking out from the roof of the garden supply store, your arrow flying true and killing them. Their body tumbled over the edge of the roof and onto the ground, but you didn’t relax as more humans came out from the store, rushing from the upper level that you hadn’t checked last night as the door had been barred shut.
You shot arrow after arrow, most of them finding their mark as the other alphas in your group did the same, taking out a total of six survivors in the span of a couple minutes. None of the others were injured, and you were thankful for that as you ran back to Joel, who was busy trying to pull the arrow from his shoulder.
“Stop that,” you commanded as you kneeled in front of him, checking the wound to determine if pulling it out was the correct choice. There wasn’t much blood seeping from the wound, but you knew that the arrow could be stopping the flow. However… leaving an arrow that could be covered in god knows what inside of his shoulder would be far worse than the potential blood loss.
Carefully, oh so carefully, you pulled the arrow out of his shoulder slowly. He groaned as you did, but stayed still enough that the entire arrowhead came out without an issue. A small amount of blood seeped from the wound and you discarded the arrow in favor of applying pressure.
“Boss, you okay?” one of the alphas asked as the group approached, having searched the garden supply store for any stragglers already.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine,” Joel said, his voice pained. His hazel eyes met yours, regret flashing in them. “Grab the supplies, we’ll leave as soon as I’m patched up.”
The alphas nodded their heads and went back to their respective stores, quickly gathering what they’d already found into their backpacks and hands. You set to binding Joel’s wound, removing his shirt and pulling out the small amount of healing supplies that the group had brought from Joel’s backpack. A few strips of clean cloth helped stop the bleeding entirely, though you were still worried about Joel. You redressed him, not listening to his words of protest as you did - you were too focused on taking care of your alpha to worry about his pride.
Before he could pick up his backpack, you grabbed it, slinging it over your own back. You were surprised at the weight of it, but you would gladly carry it back to the compound if it meant there was no added stress on Joel’s wound.
“C’mon now, ‘mega,” Joel sighed, gesturing for you to give him the bag.
“No, Joel. You’re injured, you’re not carrying anything back home,” you said, darting out of the way when Joel tried to grab you. “Let’s go meet the others.”
“You’re stubborn, y’know that?”
“You have no idea how stubborn I can be,” you giggled. The two of you made your way over to the cookware shop, where Jackson and two of the others were busy packing pots and pans into their packs as efficiently as possible. The two alphas from the garden store joined the five of you, both carrying a gardening can.
“We ready to leave?” Joel asked, surveying the group. When everyone nodded, he said, “Good. Let’s get going.”
The trek back to the compound felt far longer this time, both with the added weight in your pack and Joel’s backpack added, and you were worried about Joel the entire time. You watched him carefully, eyes drifting to his injured shoulder frequently. If Joel noticed your worry, he didn’t say anything. Instead he chose to lace his right hand with your left one, keeping you close to him.
After hours and hours of walking, you finally reached the border of the compound, the sentries nodding at the group before opening the gate. Tommy met you just inside, his eyes widening for a moment at the sight of blood on Joel’s shirt.
“What happened?”
“A group of survivors surprised us,” Joel said gruffly, already leading you by the hand back to your bedroom. Tommy opened his mouth to ask more questions, but Joel cut him off. “I’m fine.”
“Alright, you’re fine. Wanna tell me why Y/N is carrying your pack if you’re so fine?”
“She insisted.”
“Really? And you let her?” Tommy laughed. “I never thought I’d see the day that you accept help, brother.”
“I wouldn’t say that he willingly accepted it - more like I forced him to,” you said with a smile on your lips. Joel grumbled something under his breath, low enough that you couldn’t hear, but you let it slide. You knew it had to have been hard for Joel to accept any amount of help from you, his alpha instincts likely fighting him ever step of the way home. “Let’s take a bath, I feel disgusting,” you said as you began to ascend the stairs that led to your shared bedroom.
“And that’s my cue to leave,” Tommy said with a chuckle, clapping Joel on the back before turning back the way you’d came.
“Go ahead and get in the tub, ‘mega,” Joel said once you reached the bathing room. “I’ll grab us some fresh clothes.”
“Ah-ah, you’re going to let me grab them. You shouldn’t be lifting anything until you’re all healed.” Joel sighed, but didn’t argue when you accompanied him to the bedroom. You sighed in relief when you finally shrugged off Joel’s backpack, then your own. Stretching your aching muscles, you shot a smile at Joel. He smiled back at you, your heart skipping a beat at the sight.
You opened the dresser that had been moved into your room a week ago, rifling around for a set of fresh clothing for the both of you. When you had what you needed, you grabbed Joel’s hand with your free one and led him out of the bedroom and back down the hall to the bathing room.
Joel winced as he went to take off his shirt, and you tutted as you helped him remove it without jostling his arm too much. You bit your lip as you examined the wound on his shoulder, already inflamed around the edges.
“I need to clean it before you get in the bath, is there any alcohol that we could use?”
“Downstairs in the kitchen, but I don’t want you going alone,” Joel said, his hazel eyes trained on you.
“I’ll be fine, Joel, it’s one quick trip downstairs. I’ll be back in a couple of minutes.” His eyes narrowed before he nodded in agreement.
“Alright, but you need to come back to me, ‘mega. Promise?”
“I promise, alpha,” you said, a blush dusting your cheeks when you realized what you’d said. The title you’d used, that you had only used in the height of passion so far. The smile on Joel’s face was more than worth it, and you slipped out of the room before he could change his mind.
Walking in the compound alone made you nervous, especially with it being the first time Joel hadn’t accompanied you. But he needed that alcohol, and hopefully you could find a few clean bandages as well. Alphas scented you before you approached, all of them turning to look at you. More than a few looked surprised that you were walking about on your own, but they said nothing. You knew that if you even showed a hint of trying to escape, though, they would stop you in a heartbeat.
But you had no plans to escape anymore. The compound was your home, and Joel was quickly becoming the center of your world.
The kitchen was busy when you arrived, and you asked Tally, one of the few female alphas in the compound, where the medicinal supplies were.
“They’re right over here, love,” Tally said, pointing to one of the old walk-in freezers. She kept close to you as you went over to the small room, looking over the supplies carefully. “I heard what you did for the group. You helped save my Jackson, and I’m just… So grateful,” she said as you picked out what you needed to treat Joel’s injury.
“Oh, it was nothing,” you said.
“It wasn’t nothing. Jackson said you took out the majority of the group that attacked you, and I… I just want you to know that everyone here is proud of you. You kept the group safe, when you never wanted to be here in the first place.”
“Well, I… I didn’t want anyone to get hurt. We’re a team, yeah?” Tally nodded. “I was happy to help. I’ve really got to get back to Joel now, it was nice talking to you.”
“I’ll send up a piece of pie for both of you tonight,” Tally said, giving you a playful wink before returning to the cutting board she’d stepped away from.
“You don’t have to-” you stopped mid-sentence when she gave you a no-nonsense look. “Alright. Thank you, Tally.”
“Anytime, Y/N.”
You exited the kitchen and made a beeline back to the bathing rooms, only to find a shirtless Joel waiting for you at the bottom of the stairs. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw you, arms full of healing supplies.
“C’mon, sweetheart,” Joel said, waiting for you to ascend the stairs before following you.
“Why did you leave the room?” you asked once you were back inside of the bathing room, leveling a stern look at him.
“You took too long.”
You blinked once, twice. “Oh, I talked with Tally for a moment. Now, sit down,” you instructed, pointing to a chair against the wall. You ran the tap of one of the tubs, wetting a cloth before approaching Joel. You set to cleaning the wound, wincing whenever Joel did. It hurt you, making him hurt again, but you needed to be sure that there would be no infection. He let out a hiss of pain when you applied the alcohol. “I’m sorry,” you said softly.
“It’s alright, ‘mega. You’re doing a good job.”
You had a small smile on your face as you finished your task, and Joel sighed once you deemed the wound clean enough. “Alright, you can get in the tub now,” you said, watching as he stood and began to take off his pants. He winced as he did so, and you sighed. “Let me do that,” you said with a roll of your eyes, undoing the button of his jeans and unzipping them. You were blushing as you pulled down his jeans and underwear in one go, leaving him bare before you. “You’re all set,” you said quietly, backing away before you could tempt yourself into doing anything else.
You needed to be clean before you did anything with him, be free of the dried blood on your back and neck.
Both of you sank into your own tubs, and you set to scrubbing yourself clean quickly, wanting to be done before Joel was so that you could help him dress. There was no way you were going to let Joel hurt himself by being too stubborn to wait for your help. Your hair was still dripping when you dressed in a pair of sweatpants and a fresh flannel, and you just barely made it to Joel’s side when he stepped out of his own tub. You were waiting with a towel and a blush on your face, and set to drying Joel off.
“I can dry myself, y’know,” Joel said amusedly as he stared at you, your blush intensifying with his attention.
“I know, I just… I need to take care of you,” you said, voice barely above a whisper. “Let me take care of you.”
“Okay,” Joel said, his voice softer than usual. You continued drying him off, face beet red when you dried his member, then crouched to dry his legs fully. Once you’d finished, you grabbed the bandages that you’d brought with you and made him sit once more. It was nice, finally getting his wound properly cleaned and covered, and it settled your omega to see the clean cloth covering his bloodied skin. Next,
you grabbed Joel’s fresh clothes and helped him dress, being extra careful to not jostle his arm.
You led him by the hand to the bedroom and got him settled under the covers, a pillow propped up behind his back. “I’m going to go and grab us some food. Don’t move,” you said with a stern look.
“Yes ma’am,” Joel said, smiling. “Just don’t take too long, or I’ll come find you,”
“No you won’t, and I’ll be as fast as I can,” you said before leaving the room, trusting that he would stay put. You practically ran down the stairs and into the kitchen, and you nearly ran into Tally, who was carrying a tray of food. “Oh, I’m so sorry!”
“Nothing was spilled, no need to worry,” Tally said with a smile. “I was just about to bring this up for the two of you, but I guess you’re here now.”
“You didn’t need to do that,” you said, accepting the tray from her arms. “Thank you, Tally.”
“It’s the least I could do. I’m sure you’re worried sick about the boss.”
Your cheeks flushed as you nodded. “I’ve got a handle on it, but this was very nice. I’ll see you in a little bit with the dishes.”
“I’m looking forward to it.”
You turned and left the kitchen, careful not to spill anything. You made your way upstairs slower than you came down, but were back within your bedroom in after only a few minutes of being away. You set the tray on Joel’s lap before crawling onto the bed next to him, taking your own bowl of stew and tucking in once Joel had started to eat.
Silence ruled the room until you’d both finished eating, then Joel spoke.
“I appreciate what you did this mornin’.”
“What?”
“With… You helped protect the pack, and I’m glad that you did. It means a lot.”
“Oh. It was nothing, I just- just wanted to keep you safe,” you admitted with a blush dusting your cheeks. Joel smiled at you then, a soft, warm thing that made you want to curl up in his arms and never leave.
“Thank you, ‘mega.”
“You’re welcome… alpha.” You were surprised to see Joel with slightly pink cheeks, staring down at you. “I should get these dishes downstairs…”
You stood from the bed and grabbed the tray off of his lap, nearly bolting from the room. So close… You were so close to telling him about your feelings, but your sudden anxiety had you running from him, if only for the moment.
Tally smiled at you when you returned to the kitchen, placing the tray next to the large sink where another alpha was working to clean the dishes. “Have a good night!” she called out as you left the room, and you waved to her before you were fully out the door.
You walked slowly back to the bedroom, hoping to sort out your jumbled thoughts.
You wanted to be his omega - for real, not just because he had decided to claim you. And you wanted him to know that, too. You were just… afraid to tell him. Afraid of rejection.
Logically, you knew that he wouldn’t reject you. You bore his mark, and had for three months now. If he’d had any doubts about you, he would likely have told you before now.
As you walked up the stairs, you resolved yourself to tell him. You wanted - no, needed him to know. Before anything else could happen to him.
After all, in this world, nothing was safe for long.
You opened the door, and found Joel right where you’d left him, though he now had a book in his hands.
“I thought I told you not to get up…” you grumbled, then crawled into bed next to him. You peeked at the cover of the book and found that it was the last one you’d picked out before leaving the bookstore this morning. “I didn’t know you read romance novels.”
“I don’t, but you make them look so interesting. Thought I’d give one a try,” Joel said with a smile. “I can read it to you, if you’d like.”
The prospect of hearing his voice for a long while made you excited, and you nodded your head eagerly. “As long as holding the book doesn’t hurt your shoulder, that would be nice.”
“I’m stronger than you think, ‘mega,” Joel chuckled. “Now, c’mere.” He opened his right arm up and you slid over, resting your head against his chest as his arm curled around you. He began to read, his voice soothing in your ears and you yawned after a minute, your exhaustion from the day finally coming up on you.
You were almost asleep when your thoughts from earlier popped back into your mind, waking you up just enough to verbalize them. “I- I… I want to be your omega,” you blurted out, stopping Joel mid-sentence.
He turned his head to look down at you, and you met his gaze. “You already are, ‘mega,” Joel said, confused.
“I know - technically I am, but… I want to be your omega. For real.”
A smile spread over his face at your words. “You want to be mine.”
“Yes.”
“Well then, it’s a good thing that you already are, princess. You’ll always be my sweet ‘mega,” Joel said, that smile still wide. He leaned down the tiniest bit to press his lips to yours in a tender kiss. Your heart melted at the contact and you chased his lips when he went to pull away, deepening the kiss. His scent, his presence, everything about him wrapped around you and made you feel safe. You wanted to feel that way forever.
And maybe you could, here in the compound, with your alpha by your side. The world could feel close to normal again, so long as you had Joel.
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ ellie williams likes it when you beg. it all started one fateful night—a typical tuesday; you bent over the bathroom counter while she plowed her strap into you from behind, savoring each and every one of the fucked out moans she elicited when she pushed back in. soon enough you hit your high. and that’s when she heard it. a “please, ellie.” falling from your pretty pink lips. she swears she almost came from just that.
the memory practically haunts her, so clear and vivid it’s impossible to ignore. so much so that, every so often, when your nights were long, when she was all alone, she’d slip a shy hand past the elastic band of her boxers and replay the memory; your fucked out face in the mirror, your angelic voice, your lips in the shape of that desperate little word: please.
she makes it her mission to hear it again the next time she’s with you. and she’s relentless. this time she has you on all fours—arms shaking as she pulls out for the millionth time. “fuck-ellieee” you whine in frustration, your orgasm ripped from your grasp once more. “what the fuck?” you could tell she wanted something, but she just wouldn’t tell you what.
then, nothing but an accident really, the magic word finally slips past your lips. “ellie, can you please just fuck me already.” you’re too heady to notice the way her grip on your hips tightened, the way her jaw locked at the sound, so you’re taken by surprise when she grants you your reward of entrance. you moan loud when she pushes back into you without warning, whispering a soft “that’s all you had to say, baby.”
you learn quickly what to say to get what you want, and ellie thinks she might be in heaven. every “ohmygod ellie, please don’t stop” and “please keep going els i’m so close” only sent her further toward her own high, her own moans joining yours in the hot air, just as wanton, voice high and cracking as the pressure in her abdomen built. “yeah, you like that, baby?”’s and “tell me how bad you want it”’s graced your ears with every thrust, making your eyes roll back, your arch deepen.
your orgasm is mind-numbing, and you make sure ellie knows it. your moans leave your lips loud, shameless, tipping ellie over the edge as she fucked you through your high. a broken “f-fuck-” is the last you hear before her hips stutter behind you.
you bring it up once she’s cleaned you up, tucked you both into bed with you nuzzled close to her chest. “i didn’t know my voice was that hot.” you tease. she scoffs, feigning nonchalance though you can sense the subtle shyness. “get over yourself.” “ellie, you came from my voice.” you give a satisfied smile when she rolls her eyes in response, too flustered to think up a quip.
“might just have to start recording shit for you.” this time you don’t miss the shift in ellie’s face, eyebrows raised almost hopefully as if to say ‘seriously?’ “would you actually?” she asks, and you just giggle in response, “maybe,” you say sweetly, reaching up to press a chaste kiss on her nose, “if you say ‘please’.”

The next month passed by slowly, and you were still adjusting to the idea of not having to fight for your life every day. It was strange, being able to wake up without having to pack up your life every morning. Instead you could sleep in, read, crochet, do whatever you desired except leave the compound.
Not that you were really even yearning to do that anymore.
Slowly, oh so slowly, you found yourself growing accustomed to Joel’s presence, even looking forward to it. He was your main source of company, and, well… You couldn’t stop thinking about him. Your eyes would find his lips every so often, your omega daydreaming about how soft they had been during your heat, the pleasure that they had brought you.
It was infuriating.
You did your best to ignore your impulses, choosing instead to focus on whatever activity you had been allowed to participate in for the day. Every now and then you were able to help in the kitchen, or, your personal favorite, the gardens. The snow had begun to thaw, and you were eager to prepare the soil for the new batch of crops that would be planted any day now. Joel watched you the entire time, of course, still not trusting that you wouldn’t find a way to bolt out of the compound.
Currently you were kneeling on the cold ground, tilling the soil with a short garden rake. Joel was leaning against a pole, conversing with Tommy, who you now knew to be Joel’s brother. You couldn’t hear what they were talking about, but you had a feeling it was about you.
That’s all anyone seemed to talk about when you were present.
Most of the other alphas grumbled to each other about how they wished that you were their omega, how they wouldn’t make you do any work unlike Joel. Little did they know, you had begged Joel to give you something to do, anything to stave off your boredom.
You’d already gone through most of the books that piqued your interest, and you had nearly run out of yarn after making three cozy sweaters - one of them, you’d made for Joel.
He wore it like a badge of honor, clumsy stitches and all. The sight of it made you giddy, though you’d never let Joel know that. You blamed your omega for the feeling.
You heard Joel laugh at something Tommy said, a deep, throaty thing that had your heart beating faster, and refocused yourself on the earth before you. The rake hit the ground with a bit more force than necessary, lifting more soil than you had with your previous efforts. You let out a tiny sigh when some of it landed on your pants, your hand abandoning the tool to brush the dirt from your legs.
Maybe you once the weather was steadier, you could convince Joel to send a scavenging party out to look for better tools. While you didn’t mind how slow-going the work was currently, you were sure that more efficient tools would be appreciated by the others who worked in the gardens.
Or, maybe he would take you out, let you get a taste of the outdoors again. That would make you happy.
After another half an hour of working the earth, you were starting to shiver. Joel cleared his throat, drawing your attention to him.
“Let’s get inside, princess,” he suggested, raising a brow when you frowned. “We can workout, if you’d like.”
You sprung up from the ground, frown wiped off your face. “You can’t go easy on me today,” you said as you placed the hand rake back in the tool bin, then wiped the excess dirt on your hands on your pants, a pair of jeans you’d found in the piles of clothing that fit you surprisingly well.
“Alright,” Joel agreed, though you had a feeling he would do it anyways. He always seemed so worried about hurting you in the slightest way, always holding back when you sparred with each other.
“Oh, I wanna watch this,” Tommy chuckled, joining the two of you as you walked back inside, making your way to the workout room.
Joel made you warm up first, even though your muscles felt plenty ready after working in the gardens. His overprotectiveness warmed your heart, a feeling that you shook off once you took your position in front of him, arms raised. Joel smiled at you, two fingers curling at you to let you know he was ready.
You lunged, aiming for his face, missing when he dodged. Without missing a beat, you spun around, arms raised on the defensive as Joel swung for you. He just barely missed your head, and you took the opportunity to kick at his legs, landing one hit before one of his hands grabbed your calf. With your balance thrown off, he hauled you against him, an arm wrapping around your throat and pinning you to his chest. Still, you squirmed, stomping on one of his feet in an attempt to loosen his grip, but he held you more tightly, enough to cut off your breath. You wiggled for another moment before tapping your hand against his arm, gasping when he let you go.
You only gave him a moment before striking again, this time landing a hit to his groin. He doubled over for a moment and you heard Tommy chuckle loudly, distracting you just long enough for Joel to grab you a second time. You let out a huff of annoyance, disappointed that you had lost again.
“Still want me to go hard on you?” Joel asked with a grin, and you narrowed your eyes at him.
“Of course. In the real world, you wouldn’t go easy on me.” You remembered the way he had so easily pinned you to a wall when you’d first met, anger rushing back into your blood.
“No, I wouldn’t,” Joel said as his eyes watched you carefully, likely sensing your shift in mood.
You breathed for a moment, trying to let the anger go before you lunged for him once more, determined to win at least once today.
🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎
You sank into your bed with a sigh, still annoyed that Joel had beaten you every time today. He was currently having a meeting with the other alphas in the compound, one that you hadn’t been invited to. The door of your bedroom was locked, though you didn’t feel stuck in the room anymore. Instead, it was your safe haven away from the scents and sounds of other alphas, a place where only you and your alpha resided.
With a sigh, you shook your head, trying to clear your thoughts. Your alpha had still trapped you here, even if you were starting to enjoy the compound more and more each day as you were given more freedoms. Despite the way you’d been brought here, you had nearly come to terms with your new home. And your new alpha.
Just the thought of him sent little butterflies to your stomach, small, but there. The way he’d smile when you looked at him, the sound of his laugh, or how he relaxed he looked when he was sleeping… Every little thing about him was starting to affect you. While you knew you could blame it on the claiming mark, you had a feeling that it was something else. Something far more dangerous, especially in this world.
You rolled onto your back, wishing that Joel’s warmth was next to you. While spring was slowly creeping in, it was still freezing cold at night, even under the many blankets you had piled on you. A slight spark of heat lit up in your stomach at the thought of him lying next to you, the memory of how he’d made you feel during your heat at the front of your mind. You glanced to the door of the room, nervous to do what you wanted, even with it locked tightly.
Your hand dipped between your thighs, reaching for your core as you thought about how full Joel had made you feel when his knot was inside of you. The heat in your core burned brighter at the thought, and you let two fingers dip between your folds, surprised at how wet you were with just a few thoughts about your alpha. Just as you brought your fingers to your sensitive bud, you heard the door knob jiggle as a key was inserted, your hand flying away from your sex in the next moment.
Joel entered the room with a sigh, locking the door behind him. He didn’t speak as he made his way to the bed, then slipped under the blankets. You held your breath as you heard him scent you, only exhaling when he settled in without saying anything. Still, you knew that he’d sensed your arousal which sent a flaming blush to your cheeks.
You slept fitfully that night, your body begging for you to take comfort in your alpha. When you finally woke, Joel was pressed to your back, his arm slung over your waist and holding you to his chest. You let out a small purr, delighted by the warmth and comfort that the position provided you.
Joel nuzzled his face against your neck, breathing in deeply before pressing his lips to your neck. The feeling was so nice that you bared your neck further, letting him kiss the column of your neck until you came to your senses, wiggling away from him.
“Mornin’, ‘mega,” Joel said, his voice deep with sleep.
“Morning,” you managed to squeak out, forcing yourself out from under the covers. A chill went through you when you did, something that you embraced. You very much did not need for that heat from last night to reenter you, neck kisses or not.
“Whaddya feel like doin’ today?” Joel asked as he sat up, his eyes burning into your back.
“I don’t know,” you sighed. But you knew what you wanted - or what your omega wanted. But it seemed those lines were blurring, your omega becoming more and more a part of you, and infuriating new change. You’d very much like to stay neutral on how you felt about Joel except during your heats, yet it seemed that you were doing the opposite.
Falling for him.
The two of you ate breakfast in the mess hall as you ignored the stares of other alphas, slightly leaning into his side whenever the feeling of all those eyes became too much. Afterwards, Joel led you to an area of the compound that you was behind the gardens, a place that you hadn’t been shown on your tour.
A shooting range.
Not for guns, of course, but for the many bows stored in a small shed next to the targets. A grin slid onto your face when Joel held a bow out to you, the very one that you’d had before you had been brought here.
“Show me what you can do, princess.”
You wasted no time in nocking an arrow and aiming at the target, delighted to feel the taut bowstring in your fingers once again. The arrow was loosed, hitting the target in the inner ring. You made a face when you realized you’d missed the bullseye, nocking another arrow and readjusting your aim, just like you had on the road. This time, you hit the center of the target. Again, and again, and again.
Joel whistled when you’d hit your fifth bullseye in a row, clapping twice before approaching the target to remove the arrows.
“You’re a good shot,” he said, a proud smile on his face. “I can see why you didn’t have a gun on you.”
“Well, guns are loud. Not the best when you’re a lone omega trying to pick off infected.” Joel nodded in agreement. “Could I… Once there are parties being sent out, could I come along? I promise I won’t wander away, I just… I miss the outside.”
Joel let out a sigh. “I’m not too sure about that, ‘mega…”
“Please, Joel?” You gave him your best puppy dog eyes, something that usually worked on him.
“I’ll think about it. That’s the only answer I can give you for now,” Joel said. You opened your mouth to protest, but saw the look in Joel’s eyes. Instead, you nodded. At least he would think about it.
“Alright.” You took the arrows from his hand, putting all but one of them back into the quiver slung over your back. Instead of focusing on the future, you narrowed your awareness down to the targets in front of you.
🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎
Two weeks later, you woke up in Joel’s arms. You watched him sleep for a moment, enjoying how peaceful his face looked when he was in a deep slumber. He looked younger like this, and you could almost imagine the man he must have been before the world went to shit.
Maybe it was the way he looked, or maybe it was just your damn hormones, but you lowered your lips to his gently. You kissed him, letting out a contented noise when you moved back again. Joel’s hazel eyes fluttered open as his arm tightened around you, your lips meeting once more when you couldn’t resist him. His lips moved against yours, mouths melding as heat sparked between you.
It was only when his tongue darted out to taste you that you flung yourself out of bed, stumbling and falling on your ass as you stared up at him.
Joel let out a laugh before asking, “You okay?”
With burning cheeks you nodded, thoroughly mortified that you’d let your impulses win. “Bathroom?” you managed to choke out. You rose on unsteady legs and followed Joel from the room, taking the brief moment of privacy to try and right yourself.
Why had you kissed him?! There was no sane reason for you to kiss the alpha that had trapped you here, regardless of whether or not you enjoyed your new life. And yet… You found yourself wanting to do it again. To taste the alpha that had protected you during your heat, kept you safe from the other alphas in the compound day after day.
When you left the bathroom, your mind was just as scrambled as it had been when you entered. And there was Joel, standing with the hint of a smile on his face as his eyes met yours.
“Any idea of what’cha wanna do today?” he asked, those hazel eyes darting down to your lips for a fraction of a second.
“I think I’m just going to read,” you said, already heading in the direction of your room. After all, rereading a book would be better than sparring with Joel, having to look at him the entire day.
“Oh. Alright. I’ve got a couple of things to do around the compound, if you’d like to join me,” Joel offered. You shook your head. ‘”Alright, then.” He came back to the room with you, making sure you were settled in before leaving to grab breakfast for the both of you.
The entire time you were eating, you struggled to not look at Joel. To not notice the way his mouth wrapped around a spoon. To not breathe his scent in too deeply. You would almost have thought you were going into heat, but you had no other symptoms besides your desire for Joel.
You let out a deep breath once Joel had left the room, taking your dishes downstairs before he was going to go about his business. A book was in your hands, but you flopped back onto the bed instead, wondering just what was wrong with you. What had changed to make you so attracted to him? You supposed it could have been how kind he’d been to you since bringing you here, but that wasn’t new. Maybe it was that he’d allowed you your bow back. You’d been practicing your aim nearly every day, wanting to be perfect for when Joel finally allowed you into the outside world again. Or maybe it was simply a biological thing, that the claiming mark had finally worked its magic and made you have feelings for the man.
Somehow, you doubted it was that last one.
Eventually you picked up the book again, rereading a historical romance that had made your toes curl the first time you’d read it. That was how Joel found you when he returned to your room with lunch, two bowls of hearty stew that you’d realized was a staple of the compound.
“Eat up, ‘mega,” he said after passing a bowl to you, settling into his chair and tucking into his own meal. You ate in silence, avoiding Joel’s gaze the entire time, even when you could feel his eyes on you. Once you’d finished, you set the bowl back on the tray that Joel had laid at the edge of the bed. “So, are we gonna talk about it?”
The question caught you so off guard, you were thankful that you hadn’t been eating still. You were certain that you would have choked. Which, at least, could have gotten you out of the conversation you were about to have. “Talk about what?” you asked, feigning innocence.
“’Mega.” Your eyes snapped to his, the slight command in his voice making your heart beat faster. When you didn’t say anything, Joel sighed. “You kissed me.”
“And?”
“And I know you want to do it again. That’s why you’ve been all squirrely today.” Your cheeks flushed scarlet at his words, the truth within them. “Why don’t you c’mere?”
You were out of your bed and halfway across the room before you could process it, then stopped in your tracks. Joel smiled at you, patting his lap invitingly.
Fuck it.
You hauled yourself into his lap, snuggling into his chest the way you’d been wanting to for days now. Your nose found his neck and you breathed in deeply, savoring the scent of cinnamon, leather, and vanilla before letting out a soft sigh.
“That’s it, ‘mega. That’s it,” Joel murmured as his arms wrapped around you, holding you to his chest tightly. You relaxed in his hold, letting your omega take over as you finally allowed yourself the comfort of your alpha. It was freeing, giving in. You let out soft puffs of air against his neck, nearly falling asleep in his hold. “Do you wanna talk about it now?”
You whined quietly. “No.”
“Do you wanna kiss me?” Your blush intensified and you buried your face against his chest, unwilling to answer. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
“No,” you whined, lifting your head just enough to look at him, your eyes darting between his plush lips and those warm, hazel eyes.
“No, you don’t wanna kiss me?” Joel asked quietly.
You let out an indignant noise, but couldn’t answer him properly. Your lips drifted closer to his, and you let him close the distance between them. He kissed you gently, gentler than you’d thought an alpha would be able to. Joel let you lead the kiss, let your tongue dart out to taste him. It was just as good as you’d imagined it to be, and oh so soothing to your omega. Finally, it was quieted in your chest, and you pulled away a tiny bit, your breaths mingling together as you took a moment.
And then you fell onto the floor, out of his loosened grip in your embarrassment.
Joel sighed with an amused smile on his lips, but he didn’t move to grab you. Instead he let you retreat to your bed, watching as your cheeks grew redder and redder with each passing second. “I’ll let you process for a bit, sweetheart,” Joel said, standing and grabbing the tray with your empty bowl, his own joining it. He left the room, locking the door behind him, and then you were alone once more.
You weren’t sure why you’d pushed yourself off his lap, but you were glad that you hadn’t gone any further than kissing the man. At least, you were glad that you had the self-restraint to. The ache in your core certainly wasn’t pleased, but you turned to your book instead. That type of heat was safe, and unrelated to the alpha that you’d just kissed.
🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎
A week later, and you couldn’t deny it at all anymore.
Everything Joel did turned you on.
When he corrected your posture while sparring, the gentle brush of his hands sent heat tingling through you. In the gardens, his eyes on you, filled with desire, had you wanting your lips on his. When he was impressed as he watched you practice your archery, you wanted him to bend you over in the storage shed and take you then and there.
It was infuriating, how much you wanted him. And you knew why now. You had fallen for him. It was more than just the claiming mark, more than your damned biology. You had feelings for him, and wanted to be more than his omega prisoner. You wanted to be his omega, properly.
Which led to you laying next to him now, restless even though you had been tired an hour ago. An hour that had passed by, with your want for the male next to you growing each minute.
You turned over again, facing Joel this time. He seemed to be sound asleep, his breaths even and steady. You wished that you could match him and fall asleep already. Propping yourself up on an elbow, you watched his face, relaxed in sleep. Gently, very gently, you ran your hand across his jaw, fingers drifting to ghost over his lips.
Joel’s eyes opened, just barely visible in the faint light of the moon. He didn’t move to stop you, only watched you with an intensity that had your core flooding with heat. You let your hand trace his fingers for a while longer, biting your lip nervously before you lowered your mouth to his, indulging yourself in a kiss. You broke away for a moment to take a breath before kissing him again, emboldened by the cover of night.
Kissing him only spurred on the heat in your core, your need for him growing with each second. You pawed at the edge of his shirt, breaking the kiss to let him lift it over his head. Your hand ran over his chest, finding hard muscles and chest hair. Your own shirt came off next, your breasts pressing against his skin as you kissed again, more heated this time. Joel rolled you until you were on your back, his hands roaming over you carefully, as if he was afraid to break whatever spell had come over you.
You rolled your eyes and shoved your sweatpants down until you kicked them off, leaving yourself bare beside him. He hesitated, and a whine slipped from your lips. “Please, Joel.”
That was all the permission he needed before he descended upon you, his lips meeting yours as his hand found your chest. He rolled your nipple between his fingers before moving to the other, sending fizzing sparks of pleasure through you. Soon though, his hand drifted lower, ghosting over your stomach before coming to the apex of your thighs, gently nudging your legs apart. Two fingers dipped between your folds, a muffled groan coming from Joel when he found you soaked with slick.
He broke the kiss to lowered himself beneath the covers, pulling your thighs apart far enough to allow him to rest between them. You didn’t have a warning before his mouth was upon you, his tongue licking a broad stripe over your sex. You moaned at the contact, squirming slightly when he began to devour you eagerly, as if he were certain this would never happen again. Joel held you in place with his hands, strong and sturdy and refusing to let you budge an inch as he pleasured you. His tongue moved from your core to your clit, sucking on it gently before flicking his tongue against it, nearly sending you over the edge as you moaned loudly. Joel repeated the action, and you could feel the smile he was wearing as you came, your hands tangling in his hair as you did.
Joel moved up your body, slotting his hips against yours, and you let out a displeased groan when you felt him against you, hard but still clothed. “Are you sure, Y/N?” The sound of your name on his lips, so rarely said by him, sent a thrill through you and you nodded your head.
“I’m sure, Joel.”
He wasted no time in kicking off his pants, then lined himself up with your entrance, pressing into you slowly. Each inch brought a heavenly stretch, your core fluttering around him when he buried himself within you. Joel let you adjust to his size before he began to move, setting a slow but steady pace that had your toes curling. Somehow, like this, without the interference of your heat, he felt even better. You could barely breath, the pleasure was so intense.
You took gasping little breaths interspersed with moans as he fucked you, every nerve in your body alight with pleasure. When it grew too great and you were nearly at your peak again, you reached a hand to lock with one of his, needing something to tether you to reality. You could just barely make out the smile on Joel’s lips when you did so, a matching look on your own face.
You came again, the fluttering of your walls making his knot begin to catch with each thrust. His free hand slipped between you to rub circles over your clit, the added pleasure making you fall over the edge for a third time, this time dragging him with you. His knot pressed into you for the final time, locking you together as his seed spilled into you.
Gasping breaths were exchanged between you as you came down, and Joel carefully positioned the both of you on your sides while you waited for his knot to deflate. His hand caressed your face delicately, his thumb running over your lips. You leaned in for another kiss, this one short and sweet.
The restlessness you had felt earlier was gone now, replaced with satisfaction and the need for sleep. You barely felt when Joel pulled out of you, his arms tucking you against his chest for the night.
“Alpha,” you mumbled, quietly enough that Joel almost didn’t hear you.

Your heat passed in a haze of desire and surprisingly little pain, thanks to the alpha constantly by your side. In your moments of clarity you had to admit that Joel was helpful. The man had brought you food and water at regular intervals, and forced you out of your nest so that you could use the restroom. You hated being away from your nest, but it was a relief to not soil it in that way.
All in all, the alpha had been gentle with you when you needed it, and had taken control when your heat grew too powerful. And your heat felt far more bearable than the usual blinding pains that ended up happening only a day into it.
Today, your heat was an itch under your skin that couldn’t be shaken, but you felt much more like yourself. You were tempted to kick the alpha out of your nest, but the way his skin felt under your cheek was too nice to do so. And, you’d feel bad making the man sleep in a chair again, after he’d helped you so much.
You were content to lay with your head resting on his chest for what you guessed was an hour, the steady breathing of someone sleeping nearly making you fall asleep again. You felt when he woke, the slight change in his breath and the gentle rub of his hand on your lower back telling you so.
“Mornin’, ‘mega,” Joel said, his voice deep from sleep. “How’re you feelin’?”
“Better,” you mumbled. You tried to move away from him, not wanting to show how much comfort you took in his touch, but his hand held you fast.
“Feel up to taking a bath today?”
“Oh god, yes.” Joel chuckled, the sound a deep rumble in your ear.
“Let’s get goin’, then.” The two of you dressed quickly, the grime covering you from the last week feeling even more present, now that you knew you would be washing it off. Joel led you by the hand to the washroom again, sinking into his own tub after you’d settled into yours.
The cool water felt heavenly against your skin, soothing the itch in you with each second you spent in it. You scrubbed at your skin until it felt clean again, a feeling that you decided you could very much get used to. Joel finished bathing before you, the sound of water sloshing making your heart beat just a little bit faster. While you knew he was still keeping an eye on you, he gave you more privacy than your last bath, for which you were grateful. You may be claimed by the man, but you still weren’t comfortable being so vulnerable in front of him when you had your wits about you.
Once you were finished, you dressed in another pair of sweatpants and a flannel, the scent of Joel weaved into the fabric of both. While you loathed to admit it, his scent calmed your omega’s franticness, something that you’d never felt before. Usually you were forced to ignore your omega’s needs, but now… Now you were able to indulge in them.
Not that you would let Joel know that.
Joel led you back to the room you shared, hands interlocked, before leaving to grab some food for the both of you. While the lock slid into place, it was less a sound of imprisonment as it was the sound of protection. You vaguely remembered various alphas attempting to come into your room when Joel had been absent during your heat, and while it didn’t happen often, you had been terrified of some other alpha taking advantage of you in your weakened state.
Once he returned, the two of you ate in silence - you in your nest, him in the armchair in the corner of the room. It was only after he’d returned from dropping off your dishes that he spoke again.
“If you feel ready tomorrow, I thought I’d give you a tour of the place.”
A tour? What all could there be to see? “I suppose… that would be alright.” The idea of learning an escape route crossed your mind for only a moment before you rejected it, the claiming mark on your shoulder burning at the thought. Your omega obviously disapproved of your second-long plan to escape from your alpha, which annoyed you thoroughly.
Only a week ago, you were a fully self-sufficient woman, never bowing to your omega except during your heats. And now, here you were, claimed and ready to accept your fate.
You fell back against the bed, fighting your urge to pick a fight with the male who had trapped you here.
This was your life now.

The tour turned out to be more interesting than you’d thought. There were gardens, most of them covered in snow at the moment, but they did have one patch that was fully covered, as close to a greenhouse you could get in the apocalypse. That was the area that held your interest the most, your fascination with plants winning the war against your annoyance at not being allowed to help in the gardens. The other place that held your attention most was the training rooms, filled with miscellaneous workout equipment that had been scrounged from the surrounding area. You were hopeful that at some point, you would be allowed to use the place. Next came the kitchens, which were fully functioning if in slight disrepair, and filled with alphas busy preparing dinner.
All in all, you were impressed by how large the compound they had secured was. And, once you were back in your room, you missed the commotion that came from so many people bustling about, doing their jobs.
Jobs. As if they had secured a functioning society in this new world.
And Joel, it seemed, was their leader. Along the way, he would issue orders to alphas who were sitting idly, giving them something to do with their time. In the kitchens, he had supervised for a few minutes, making sure that the other alphas were following whatever protocol they were taught to use.
While you would have been grateful to wander the compound alone, even without a plan to escape, you found yourself grateful that Joel was by your side. Your heat was nearly over, but you could see the way the other alphas looked at you - like you were a piece of meat, something to be devoured. You had no doubt that they would do just that, given the chance. But a simple look from Joel had them averting their eyes, the hunger in them dissipating.
At least you had been claimed by an alpha that would keep you safe from others.
Night fell quickly, and with all the excitement, you were feeling rather tired. You settled into the mattress, the remnants of your nest having been taken away to be washed. A few thick blankets were pulled over you, staving off the chill of winter that had seeped in through the windows of the room.
You couldn’t fall asleep. You would nearly reach the point of blissful unconsciousness, only to snap awake again when you felt like something was off. It didn’t take you long to figure out what was wrong - the alpha, sitting in an armchair with only one blanket draped over him.
“Joel?” you asked quietly, not wanting to wake him if he was lucky enough to have fallen asleep already.
“Yes, ‘mega?”
“Can…” you hesitated, knowing that this would be a line crossed if you were to ask. But then the feeling of wrong washed over you again, and in a small voice you asked, “Can you come over here?”
Joel didn’t answer, and instead you heard the rustle of fabric and quiet footsteps before the mattress dipped, and a cool wash of air hit you as the blankets were lifted. He settled in easily, and you could almost feel the smile on his face as you snuggled into him, your head resting over his heart.
The steady beats lulled you to sleep, your omega quieted once more.

Days passed with you and Joel secluded in your room, and soon you were out of books. You’d read them all, westerns included. Safe to say, you were bored.
“Joel.”
“Yes, ‘mega?”
Your heart thumped traitorously at the title, and you willed it to calm without much success. “I’m bored.”
Joel looked up from the book he was reading, one of the ones that you had blasted through a day ago. “What would you like to do?”
You were surprised at being given a choice. “Uhm… I don’t know?” you said, feeling silly for even bringing it up, but then a thought popped into your head. “Could we go to the training rooms? It would be nice to move around some…”
“Of course, sweetheart,” Joel said, earmarking the page he was on and setting the book on the floor next to his chair. He stood, and looked at your expectantly. “Well? C’mon, princess.”
You hopped out of bed, excited at the prospect of using your muscles for more than lifting books, or bringing a spoon to your lips. You let Joel lead you by the hand to the training room, a smile on your face as he did so.
The next hour and a half was filled with you jogging around the open space, lifting some of the smaller weights, and, most surprisingly, sparring with Joel. He went easy on you, of course, never using his full might as he let you attack him, only occasionally swinging for you. That annoyed you - you wanted to be taken seriously as an opponent, omega or not.
Still, the both of you were smiling at the end of your session, and you decided that you liked the look on Joel. It softened the planes of his face and made him look more youthful, even under the beard he was sporting.
You stopped by one of the storage rooms on your way upstairs, and with Joel’s permission you grabbed a few more novels that looked interesting enough, along with a bag of sealed, clean yarn and a crochet hook. You dropped your goodies off in your room before the both of you bathed, then returned to your room in time for dinner. Feeling rather chipper, you patted the bed next to you before Joel could return to his armchair after taking the dishes downstairs.
Even in the darkness of the room, you could see the flash of surprise on Joel’s face before it was replaced with a soft smile. Joel settled into the bed next to you, his arm welcoming you as you nuzzled against him.
You tried not to think about the way that your relationship with the man had changed over the past week and a half, but you couldn’t help yourself. You’d gone from pissed off and imprisoned to willingly sharing a bed with him, and that… concerned you. So easily, you’d given into your instincts and let the alpha take charge of you, let him take care of you.
And yet somehow, despite your unease, you were unable to keep yourself from curling against his body as you drifted into a peaceful sleep.
