The tooth-billed pigeon, also known as the Manumea, was actually believed to be extinct for a time.  No birds had been sighted since 2006, until a naturalist hanging out his laundry spotted one in 2013.  The native people of Samoa call the tooth-billed pigeon the “princess of the forest”, and worry because sightings have become so rare.

This Endangered pigeon is found only in Samoa, where it is the national bird. Didunculus, its genus name, means “little Dodo,” as it is closely related to the Dodo. As of 2013, there may be fewer than 200 of these birds left in the wild and none in captivity. They will likely soon be classified as Critically Endangered. Because of their rarity, not much is known about their habits, although they probably eat fruit and may nest on the forest floor.

Manumea, Tooth Billed Pigeon, or Little Dodo (Didunculus strigirostris) -

Native to Samoa, this large pigeon is the only member of its genus, which means "little dodo".  Like its extinct dodo bird cousin, it is a member of the pigeon family.  

The conservation of this species is proving to be very difficult.  Having just recently been listed as dndangered, the IUCN is considering listing it as critically endangered.  Extremely vulnerable in the wild to deforestation, hunting, introduction of non native predators, a slow and fragile birth rate, as well as heavy competition in its habitat is rapidly bringing their numbers down.  Currently, no birds are alive in captivity today, but captive breeding may be the only way to save them.
