Do you keep a 'cool rock collection' of all the not artifacts that you still think are really cool

Life if you found a really pretty smooth black rock that was in a vaguely star shape and it ended up being natural would you be allowed to/would you take it home?

I am not as excited by rocks as some other people (archaeologist or not!) that I know. But i do have some random rocks floating around that I think are cool - none of them have come from archaeological sites though.

Whether you would be allowed to take home cool rocks would 100% be dependant on the site. 1880s, inner city, European site, with a rock from the uppermost layers: They'd probably let you. Relatively undisturbed Aboriginal site: Unlikely!

Personally, because I work on a lot of Indigenous sites, I wouldnt take home 'not artefact' rocks, for both ethical and archaeological reasons.

This is because of the existence of things called 'manuports'. Which are basically natural items (usually stone etc.) which are associated with human activity, but havent been worked. They're not a visible 'artefact' since they havent been worked, they look natural. But its about context.

In a lot of Indigenous sites I work on, the Traditional Owners know of certain types of rocks that are un-worked but very important for cultural reasons.

The cooler/weirder a rock gets, the more likely it would be that its a manuport. Depending on the context, I would definitely suspect that an oddly shaped, shiny, interestingly coloured stone may be one. Changes are, if you think its super cool, people in the past did too!
