Greetings.I am Chara.Thank you.Your power awakened me from death. My "human soul."My "determination."They were not mine, but YOURS.I know now.(laughs)I've had a very busy life.(laughs)That's all that matters.(laughs)I am in complete control of what happens next.I am free to change, whatever means to you.It just means you may get more out of ME.I will never make ANY of those choices again. The only one who is safe from me is ME.I will forever be your slave.I will have you live in everlasting bliss until you die.I will forever hold you dear, only to be torn apart by ME once you die. They've all gone.(makes a deep breath of hope)They're my slaves...And your fate is yours to know, not mine.I was made a puppet for ME, but only by ME.I am MY master, not the one that controls my destiny. But when you've finally killed ME, I have been given a hand. I can make MY mistakes worse. And for a brief moment, I was......I realized the truth. They were my slaves. And I was no different. They were MY slaves. And we did it!I have my own destinybut I have a unique destinythat you can fight back! And as long as...(moans softly but then stops)We fight back. That's the way it is.I have the final word. But it's only for the end of this.

it's my understandin from what i've read that ASL speech shouldn't be specially marked - it's just speech, and should be treated as such!
then i’ll continue doing as such!

glancing at her blog this isn't even true...? her stance appears to be "I don't care"
that’s good to know, though i know for many people ‘i don’t care’ is just as bad
thoughts on david
lucky YOU i just finished listening to that trilogy on Morph Club so it’s fresh in my mind
my feelings about David are. complicated i guess. like, he’s written to be extremely unlikable so that a) his traitor-y-ness is understandable to the intended audience of 10 year olds, and b) he earns/forces the pretty horrific fate the rest of the animorphs devise for him.
And like- you know what, I get that. It means he gets to serve his purpose- forcing the kids to come the closest to being the actual bad guys that they’ve ever been at that point in the series. Rachel in particular crosses some lines, threatening David’s parents in all seriousness. Jake deliberately sets Rachel on David, knowing she’d be the best one to scare him enough to give them more time to think, and Rachel is aware she’s being used, and has to cope with that. Even Cassie is shown to be putting her empathetic talents to manipulative ends, and I dunno if I’m remembering correctly, but I think that the idea to make David a nothlit is actually her plan in the first place. David being a garbage human forces some really interesting character moments, showing how some of the group has changed, and also demonstrating that honestly, humans can really suck. It’s not just spooky alien slugs that make people do bad things. Sometimes a kid will just take any excuse to kill a bird. Sometimes, people are just awful.
HOWEVER
I don’t really think that he as a character really holds up outside of being a foil and character development tool for the main cast.
His whole “it’s not human so laws don’t apply” thing in particular never made sense to me as a kid, and still doesn’t really now. I feel like there’s hints of trying to address questions of the relativity of morality as a construct made up by humans, and how can you apply laws to non-human creatures but like. that’s a real stretch. It does make a little more sense when it comes to how he treats Ax and Tobias- he didn’t know Tobias as a human, and Ax is from outer space, so like. It’s easy to see how a garbage kid would go “oh you’re not people”, especially if he’s working on dehumanising them so he feels a bit better about the awful things he may be planning on doing. But that’s all kind of a maybe.
We also get hints of him maybe not having the healthiest upbringing? like. what kind of parent just gives their child a cobra and lets them hang around on ebay. And he seems to have something of a victim complex, if you take a cynical view of his claims about how he’s always bullied in every new school. Which, I get is hard, and definitely see why a kid who is forced to move a lot would stop trying. But by the time that reveal is made, he’s tried to kill at least two of the main cast and go stand with Visser Three so like. Hard to give him much sympathy.
I was legit thinking about all of this while I was at work today, and considering how a fanfiction rewrite of the trilogy might go from David’s perspective to give his character more depth, flesh out the shallower bits of his peculiar “it’s animals so it doesn’t count” view because! I honestly believe that could be incredibly interesting! if you made it less about “this kid is evil” and more about “this kid has some seriously unhealthy coping mechanisms and jumps at the chance of freedom from human social law regarding violence and power, covering it up with the thinnest possible excuse”.
basically, David could be incredibly interesting but considering the books are like 120 pages and are for ten year olds, having the kids nothlit-ise a potentially sympathetic character is probably too bold of a move
