i plan to get into it with a more detailed post about miche's character design and the things i keep in mind when drawing him (cos i have some thoughts about how it relates to his character and also bc i like talking abt my artistic processes) after my comic is done, but one of the things i like about miche's character design is that he has a "softness" to him

rounded chin, soft cheeks, soft hair (ok i thinks its mainly bc of his hair), calm and "kind" eyes as noted by isayama

an overall soft feeling design compared to someone like erwin who he shares a lot of base traits with (tall, blonde, prominent nose, serious eyes) but differs in that erwin is drawn more "sharply"

also do gotta acknowledge that the animators and isayama have drawn him differently (like in the beast titan chapter isayama doesnt even draw him with his jawline beard half the time lol), but generally i think miche has a "softness" to his design and its something i keep in mind when drawing him.

I find the last bit of this Smartpass story featuring Miche and Levi to be rather interesting. Even though it's the future they're fighting for, Miche seemingly finds the idea of a world without titans and him living a peaceful life reviewing luxury goods to be unrealistic to the point of amusement.

Considering that he'd been fighting for so long, seen so much death, and the Survey Corps of his time still knew next to nothing about the titans, I wonder if he held a bit of a "defeatist" attitude that he kept to himself since he was probably so accustomed to this way of life that imagining a better, peaceful future was difficult for him. And I think this is reinforced somewhat with some of his victory dialogue in AoT 2 where he sounds like he's in disbelief that they've won a mission.

Despite this, Miche still fought for that better future and held onto the belief that people haven't lost until they stop fighting, as shown in the main story where he gives his speech to Nanaba when the Wall Rose titans appear and even in this Smartpass story where he carries that belief into a chess game that he's losing.

And I think that's what makes his death scene even more upsetting when you factor these traits in -- that he was so broken physically and mentally that he couldn't keep up the fight in his final moments and resorted to begging and crying for mercy instead, which is apparently something even Isayama acknowledged as being one of the cruelest things he could do to a character.

Was doing some wind-down sketches of Miche and it got me thinking about that maybe one of the reasons why I like drawing him so much is because I kinda have to restrain myself whenever I draw him.

From my time studying animation, one of the things that you're taught is to always push poses and emotions as far as (reasonably) possible, especially if you're working with a cartoony style which is what a lot of studios in Australia do. And thinking back to my time during Uni and even learning about animation from Youtube during high school, I don't really recall there being as much emphasis/focus on subtlety compared to exaggeration, if at all.

So whenever I'm drawing a reserved character like Miche or want to draw subtle emotions for any character, I often have to remind myself to do the complete opposite of what was beaten into my head, which can be a bit challenging as I have to try and find the right balance of an expression that's subtle but still clear, or like not OOC (unless it's for comedic purposes).

#ofc it does depend on the expression and pose but a lot of my sketches of miche are pretty chill #will i post these sketches? idk there are some that i'm thinking of cleaning up but for the most part i'm not interested in posting them #since they're just stuff i draw to relax #maybe i should draw him doing actiony stuff i can exaggerate him a bit then since he can be pretty intense during fights #maple.ramble #it kinda feels like subtle acting is something that you have to teach yourself in western animation #or idk maybe the fancier art/media schools include it in their course work and my uni just taught industry standard stuff

ngl i've spent an absurd amount of time just scrolling through old and abandoned aot blogs

#they're a really interesting time capsule for the different years of the fandom #and even though i was around during 2014-2015 i missed out on a lot of stuff in the following years #and it wasnt until like late 2024 that i began looking at the tumblr fandom again and then i made this blog like half a year ago #idk but i do like to look through old blogs out of nostalgia for those times #and to also find art that has fallen out of circulation which is where a lot of my reblogs come from lol #and *cough* to find more mike content *cough cough* totally not a big reason #maple.ramble
