In an update to his two-party map, political scientist David Sparks shows the evolution of the two-party system across the country, since 1920. Red and blue. This map is interesting as it shows evolution over the element of time. I am not sure if the data visualized is 100% right or biased but maps like these can definitely tell a good story.

Though far away, there’s still a lot you can see, as the NASA Earth Observatory notes :
On August 17, 2016, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired an image (above) of dense smoke plumes roughly 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Mosul. There appear to be multiple sources of fire, most likely oil wells from the Qayyarah oil field. The images in the grid below show the plumes changing direction and thickness since they were first spotted by Landsat 8 on June 14.
This series of LANDSAT images can be great tools for providing warnings ahead of time and the trail they are taking in order to assist with evacuation if the situation persists.

The First Apple series by Ramón Espantaleón was a tribute to New York, in light of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Espantaleón recreated scale models of the cities in clay, painstakingly constructing each building at 1/65 scale, before using them to cast silicone molds which could then produce recreations made of epoxy resin and polyurethane. Espantaleón, a Madrid native who lived in New York on the day the World Trade Center fell, places these pixelated city blocks onto representations of the Twin Towers.

Meet 79-year-old Jerry Gretzinger, the creator of this map. For 50 years now he has been creating a map of a fictional world, and not just any, fold-it-up-and-shove-it-in-the-glove-compartment map; spreading over more than 2,500 sheets of A4 paper, Jerry copies and adds to the imagined landscape each day in his coffee break.
This map is so different simply because it is an everyday hobby for Jerry, an escape route into another world for sometime everyday and last but not the least, simply because he’s so passionate about this.

OldNYC draws from NYPL's 80,000 original photographs, many of which are more than a century old. I found this project interesting as it intends to be in the junction to drive knowledge in both library holdings and urban surroundings. This interactive map never gets old for both residents and workers.

Shakespeare is renowned for his understanding of the range and depth of human emotions. Like no other of his guild he thematises love, hate, desire, revenge and many other basic feelings, revealing the gloomy sides of the human race in a meticulous way.
This installation should give an insight into the emotional dramaturgy of three of his tragedies – Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet and King Lear. The plays are colour-coded in terms of positive, negative or neutral feelings of the respective characters, represented by 60,000 coloured dots. At one glance the emotional course of those stories can be felt. The aim of the project is to catch the observer’s attention by involving him into an intimate dialogue on a deep emotional level.

Global Forest Watch (GFW) is an interactive online forest monitoring and alert system designed to empower people everywhere with the information they need to better manage and conserve forest landscapes. Global Forest Watch uses cutting edge technology and science to provide the timeliest and most precise information about the status of forest landscapes worldwide, including near-real-time alerts showing suspected locations of recent tree cover loss. Users can also contribute to GFW by sharing data and stories from the ground via GFW’s crowdsourcing tools, blogs, and discussion groups. Special “apps” provide detailed information for companies that wish to reduce the risk of deforestation in their supply chains, users who want to monitor fires across Southeast Asia, and more. GFW serves a variety of users including governments, the private sector, NGOs, journalists, universities, and the general public.
Maps like these help promote awareness and forces people to sit up and take notes on how they are promoting destruction to the natural resources of our planet. People, once faced with the facts on a visual and global medium prompts to start to take action to reverse the consequences of their doings.
GFW is a growing partnership of organizations contributing data, technology, funding, and expertise. The GFW partnership is convened by the World Resources Institute.
