World map on Mercator projection with polar insets and elaborate decorative border showing the seven planets and wonders of the world, four elements and seasons, as well as the division into the frigid, temperate and torrid climatic zones. Ptate 4 of Blaeu's world map of 1606 engraved by Josua van den Ende. "Ja. van den Ende sculpsit”.Beach and Nova Guinea shown; Tierra del Fuego as an island on main map, but as part of Magallanica on south polar view. Scale [1: 720] 1 in. = 60 feet (E 149°43'10"/S 34°45'30") 1 map on 3 sheets : col., mounted on linen ; each 67 x 102 cm.

Map shows area from Nicholson St. to Addison St., from Cowper St. to Sloane St. Shows type of buildings (brick, wood, iron) with base outlines and notes on types of roofs, no. of storeys. Measurements are in feet. Street names. Names of occupiers or owners, shops, public buildings, hotels, schools, with names. 

Sometimes known as fire underwriters maps or block plans, fire insurance maps were produced as a record of what was being insured and were also of use to firefighters if the situation arose. The maps were mainly produced for areas with a high density of commercial buildings. The maps also show historians in great detail what and who, was in a town or suburb at a particular date, sometimes down to the location of doorways, level. The State Library holds thousands of suburban and town subdivision plans.  These are mostly real estate agents’ advertisements or surveyors’ sketches created between the 1880s and 1930s as large estates were broken up and sold. Many of them are beautiful pictorial records of the subdivision.  

They were often pasted onto telegraph poles and placed in shop fronts to entice people to the auction.  Some are annotated with sales prices and block sizes. They are a great source for local and family historians, heritage consultants and those interested in the history of their house.

The Sydney suburb of Collaroy has featured prominently in the local news lately following the damage to beachside homes by recent storms. Isometrical view of the settlement, Norfolk Island [after 1847] / drawn by Don Docker, 16 June 1923

Description: 1 drawing: ink, watercolour; 57 x 90 cm.  Signed and dated on mount lower left 'Don Docker June 16 1923'. Inscribed in pencil on back of picture: 'Second Settlement. Date 1847+ fixed by the gate in no. 20, the New Gaol, called Gallows Gate. Unless there was a gate exactly similar before this, fixes the date 1847, or later, as Gallows Gate was built then. Information supplied by Mr Heath of Norfolk Island', 'Settlement Norfolk Island', 'Copied from this edge of picture Don Docker June 15 1923'.

On 14 September 1844 the administrative control of penal colony Norfolk Island passed from New South Wales to Van Diemen's Land. In 1856 the Pitcairn Islanders, descendants of the Bounty mutineers, were resettled on Norfolk Island by the British Government. Dated from inscription on mount. Original manuscript in the handwriting of Captain Cook relating to his second voyage, 6 Feb. 1772. On verso: "Captain Cook's opinion of the rout the Resolution and Adventure ought to take to explore the Southern Ocean, humbly submitted to the consideration of the Earl of Sandwich." Bound with letter and the other MS. in a volume entitled Original manuscript in the handwriting of Captain Cook relating to his second voyage. Acquired through the New South Wales Agent General in London in 1922, the map was removed from the bound volume in 1998 and transferred to the Maps Collection.
