Athena is the city protectress, goddess of war, handicraft, and practical reason, identified by the Romans with Minerva. She was essentially urban and civilized, the antithesis in many respects of Artemis, goddess of the outdoors.
What is the Parthenon?
The Parthenon is a 5th century BC marble temple located in the Acropolis of Athens. Dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena and built during the height of the Greek empire’s power, it is the most renowned among the monuments of the Acropolis.
The Parthenon was built to replace two earlier temples dedicated to Athena, including an unfinished one on the same spot.
The Parthenon is dazzling white today, but descriptions in ancient texts and traces of paint found on its sculptures suggest the temple and its statues were vividly decorated in colours such as blue and red.
