UFC Picks ABC to Regulate White House Card, DC Commission Cries Foul

Dave Herman failed his UFC 153 drug test for marijuana. It is his second failed test for weed. 

UFC 153 took place in Brazil, which has no athletic commission, so the UFC acted as their own commission. They suspended Herman six months and will require him to attend marijuana rehab. There's is nothing unusual about this except HOLY FUCK MARIJUANA REHAB?

Here's what VP of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner had to say about it:

"We feel very strongly that there's a big difference between PED's [performance-enhancing drugs] and marijuana," Ratner told MMAFighting.com earlier this week. "We think the commissions do a good job with PEDs, but we think with marijuana there should be some form of rehab involved, going through that kind of process and learning about it."

No punch line necessary.

These are the same commissions that reduced Chael Sonnen and Alistair Overeem's suspensions from one year to six and nine months, respectively. Why? Who knows. They're both well-spoken gentlemen, so maybe that had something to do with it. I don't care that said suspensions were reduced (I just want to see them fight), but to suggest the athletic commissions are doing a good job handling positive PED tests is absurd.

What's more absurd is the notion that Herman needs rehab for his weed habit. Two states legalized (capital "L") marijuana on Tuesday, and we're closing in on half the country having some mix of medical or decriminalized status. 

And what about the handful of drunk driving cases in the UFC? Chris Leben, Josh Neer, poster-boy Jon Jones. Why didn't the UFC mandate they attend rehab, seeing as they put other people's lives in danger?
