I was listening to one of 3 Bill Fay 7"s (Mary Lattimore, Kevin Morby, and Steve Gunn) I picked up from the Secretly Canadian 7" sale. I was thinking how Bill Fay reminded me a bit of Ed Askew (New York), and of course that got me thinking of Askew. I ran across this album, "London", which was recorded when Askew was playing a mini tour with Mike Heron (The Incredible String Band) and Trembling Bells in the summer of 2017.
Once I was listening to this, I began wondering what Askew was up to - I mean, I knew he was pretty old. Unfortunately, Askew passed away this past January. All the more reason to celebrate his life and talent with a post. Do yourself a favor, listen to "Ask the Unicorn", Boats and Roads (my introduction to Askew), and "For The World" (with Mary Lattimore, Sharon Van Etten, and Marc Ribot).
A lot of his later work (including "London") has been released on Tin Angel Records.
