6.) Who is W.D. Gaster? And what is his relation to the brothers?
You know, for a while there was a discussion of Toby coming out with a comic that explained Gaster’s backstory. While I would welcome any new official Undertale content, part of me also hopes that the comic never comes out, that his backstory is never explained. What makes Gaster so unique a character is that we know the barest of things about him. Hell, even the sprite we assume is him might not even be him! And from those tiny threads of information, writers and artists have made tapestries. There’s so many interpretations. Maybe Gaster is a skeleton, maybe he isn’t. Maybe he’s the father of the skeleton brothers, or the brother, or maybe Sans was merely one of his staff like Alphys. Maybe he was Sans and Papyrus, fused. Or just Papyrus, I read a great fic exploring that idea.
I really am into any and all interpretations, and I pick and chose Gaster’s origins to fit whatever my story is.
7.) General head-cannon on Gaster?
When I write Gaster, I tend to favor a certain type of personality for him. He’s proud, intelligent, and a longtime friend and acquaintance of the royal family. He’s passionate about his work, the type of person to get so wrapped up in a project he doesn’t think to sleep or eat. He has no patience for people he thinks are inferior to him. This is not a good thing; he can be a bit of an overconfident asshole. However, all his faults leave him great room for growth and improvement.
When I think of him as a dadster, I do generally think of him as a kinder monster than when he’s not. Or rather, he’s a bit of a jerk to everyone but his darling children.
