Nigerian-American Sports Analyst Says Giannis Cannot Be The Face Of The League
Emmanuel Acho is a former NFl cornerback, and now host of the struggling Speak For Yourself on Fox Sports. You may know him as the dude that literally, looks like the black Bart Simpson.
Along with his, less than astute co-host in Marcellus Wiley, gave a take that completely undermines what you think a guy of Nigerian descent would know about sports fans and the global sports market.
His take was that Giannis cannot be the face of the league on account of people not being able to pronounce his name.
You would think that a paid member of the sports media would understand that, the wider public knowing how to pronounce “Antetokounmpo” starts with the talking heads in the media, whose job it is to inform the public, pronouncing his name correctly, themselves.
It was idiotic but it’s quite typical of what you would see on Fox Sports and it’s about time we had this conversation about Fox Sports in general.
It matters that Emmanuel Acho, is the host of Speak For Yourself because before Acho took that seat, it belonged to Jason Whitlock, an overweight, black republican guy, who routinely speaks against movements like black lives matter. When the show first started airing, Whitlock saved his most controversial takes for the Colin Kaepernick topic.
The point here is that this is a show that knows who they are playing to and their politics bleeds into the show.
My whole thing is that Emmanuel Acho should know better than to use Giannis’ differences against him like that and having grown up in America he definitely knows what that’s like. Instead he repeated the lazy tropes that are consistent throughout a lot of sports media and even more so on a network that caters to a republican audience.
What Acho did was intellectual coonery and purposely dumbing himself down for his older, white, republican-voting, immigrant hating audience.
I won’t say that I’m shocked, the show was way too closely tied to Whitlock’s politics and that’s the theme of the of the show. You’re a recurring guest if you mirror a certain politics. That’s why Marcellus Wiley is on the show full time and guys like Seth Joyner and Eric Davis, both former NFL players in thier own right, are not on the show.
it’s very lame to watch two black men being shoved in front of this audience and pretending as if they’re welcome or even like by them.
To be honest, I don’t care if Giannis becomes the face of the league because his global impact already surpasses a bunch of players who have been in the sport longer than him.
“Face of the league” has more to do with Adam Silver’s marketing team than it does what happens on the court and it has never mattered as much as people say it does, other than having a celebrity face to introduce new viewers to the sport.
What we do know is this, Giannis is a champion and none of the media, left leaning or otherwise, knew they’d ever have to acknowledge him as one.
