Dragonfly at the New York city Bronx Botanical Garden A week ago my wife and I went to the NYBG in the Bronx where they were several indoor and outdoor exhibits being shown by artist Yayoi Kusama. Kusama's exhibits were pretty incredible, especially the infinity room. The gardens have lots of great photo opportunities of plants and small wildlife. Did you know dragonflies were around more than 300 million years ago And although current dragonfly wingspans are only two or 3 inches long, ancient fossils have found dragonflies wings to be 2 to 3 feet. Currently there are more than 5000 species of dragonflies and best of all they eat mosquitoes. Ths is a partial image of a dragonfly perched on the edge of a leaf. Huntington Harbor Lighthouse The Huntington Harbor Lighthouse was completed in 1912 and is located at the entrance to Huntington and Lloyd Harbors. Built in a Venetian Renaissance style, the light looks like a small castle. The original lens was a fifth order Fresnel Light and there was also a 1,000 pound fog bell that had to be rewound every 1 1/2 hours. Originally operated by the US Lighthouse service with a dedicated light keeper, it was eventually taken over by the US Coast Guard who in 1949 automated the light and fog horn. Without a light keeper on site to maintain the light, by 1985 it fell into disrepair and was going to be demolished and replaced by a steel tower with an automated light. Concerned Huntington citizens and area boaters protested and a non-profit group called “Save The Huntington Lighthouse” was established and able to convince the Coast Guard not demolish the light into give it to the society who started it’s renovation. The light is now owned by the “Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society” (https://www.huntingtonlighthouse.org). The society has spent recent years renovating both the inside and the outside as well as the underlining foundation structure & rip-rock which was badly needed to prevent for Lighthouse collapsing into the harbor. Rising out at the water at the mouth of Huntington Harbor, the Huntington Lighthouse is a beautiful structure. 2021 Gurwin Photo Contest Every year the Gurwin Healthcare System (https://www.gurwin.org/), which operates an excellent local nursing home with over 400 residents, runs an Annual Photo Contest. This is the 1st year that I entered. The Gurwin Photo Contest is known as one of Long Island’s premier photo competitions and  is supported by The Tiffen Company, in memory of Helen and Nat Tiffen, the company’s founder and a former Gurwin resident. Based in Hauppauge, NY, The Tiffen Company is a leading manufacturer of glass filters and other fine products for digital, still, video, motion pictures and television.   For this contest, photos are judged on the basis of subject matter, composition, clarity and suitability for display at Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Categories for this contest included Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Nature, Wildlife, Still Life, Altered/Enhanced, Student, Long Island/New York, and Action/Sports.
