It’s day 31 of the #smarchvinylchallenge by @brandudesrecordvault: The Closer - Album With A Great Closing Track. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks (Virgin/Warner Bros., 1977) Not only is EMI one of the great kiss-off songs in history, no one has had the last word with as much finality as Johnny Rotten. The way he says, “Hello EMI…Goodbye A&Mmmmm!” sends the song into legendary territory. It’s hilarious, too, because he’s reminding you that before they dissed EMI to sign with Virgin, they had fallen out with A&M! It’s day 30 of the #smarchvinylchallenge by @brandudesrecordvault: Treasured Memory - An Album With A Memory Attached. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River (Fantasy, 1969/71) I’ve probably written about this before, but when my friend Mike’s older brother was away at college, we went into his room and helped ourselves to a bunch of his albums. Part of my haul was nearly the complete discography of CCR. The only ones I didn’t get were Mardi Gras, because he didn’t have that one, and Willie & The Poor Boys, because Mike wanted that one for himself! Ah, treasured memories… P.S. I made it up to the older brother later…like decades later 😂. It’s day 29 of the #smarchvinylchallenge by @brandudesrecordvault: 96 Tears - A Sad Album. Ry Cooder - Paris, Texas (Warner Brothers, 1985) God, I envy anyone seeing this mysterious, gorgeous, richly layered, and, yes, SAD movie for the first time. One of several Wim Wenders masterpieces from the 80s, it contained a career-defining performance by Harry Dean Stanton and beautiful work from Natassja Kinski. All of the artistic components were perfectly in place, from the story by Sam Shepard and the screenplay by L.M. Kit Carson to the cinematography by Robby Müller and, of course Cooder’s music, so delicately and sensitively played by him with David Lindley and Jim Dickinson. And Stanton’s vocal? Heartbreaking! It’s day 28 of the #smarchvinylchallenge by @brandudesrecordvault: I Was A Teenage Shithead - I Just Didn’t Get It Back Then. Billy Cobham - Total Eclipse (Atlantic, 1974) When I was a teenager, anything that smacked of “jazz fusion” was anathema, unless Miles Davis was involved. While I’m still on the fence about Return To Forever and Weather Report, I have many pleasures in albums like this one, which has smoking hot rhythms, fiery guitar, funky bass, layered horns and keyboards. It’s day 27 of the #smarchvinylchallenge by @brandudesrecordvault: About Last Night…Album To Listen To While You Recover. Julie London - Julie Is Her Name Volumes I and II (Return To Analog, 2017) I’ve never heard volume 2 before and volume 1 sounds way better than my 60-year-old pressing. In fact, this sounds so clear, intimate, and present that it’s like being in the studio with London and her compatriots. It’s hard to imagine a better aural presentation of her unique art, which is sweet and smooth, perfect for whatever you need to recover from. Great song selection on both volumes, too, with Goody Goody being a marvelous discovery. Pierre Boulez - Wagner: Der Ring Des Nibelungen Excerpts (Philips, 1981) Diana Ross - S/T (Motown, 1975) Bonny Light Horseman (@37d03d , 2020) What do these three albums have in common, you ask? They all give us the opportunity to celebrate the birthdays of three remarkable musician, all born this day in 1925 (Boulez), 1944 (Ross), and 1981 (Anais Mitchell, 1/3 of BLH). So that means that Mitchell was born the same year Boulez’s triumph at Bayreuth was hitting the record shops, where it fell in the greedy hands of this neophyte Wagnerian. It’s day 25 of the #smarchvinylchallenge by @brandudesrecordvault: G.O.A.T. Jimi Hendrix - Superpak (Trip, 1977?) That Jimi Hendrix is the greatest of all time when it comes to the electric guitar is not in doubt. He was also a fine singer, brilliant songwriter, and a whiz in the studio. But even the greatest among us have humble beginnings, which was a lesson I quickly learned when I dropped the needle on this cheapo compilation of his pre-fame recordings with the lines of Larry Youngblood and other stalwarts of the Chitlin Circuit. Not a terrible record, just rather generic. It’s day 24 of the #smarchvinylchallenge by @brandudesrecordvault: Eat It! An album or song about food. The Melachrino Strings - Music For Dining (RCA Victor, 1958) Not about food, per se, but made for dining. Mostly a serene meal, too, although there are a few moments of bombast and some groovy cha chas to keep things interesting. I mainly bought this (and its companions Music For Reading and Music For Relaxing) for the cover but it’s also an interesting window into something that was popular in the 50s. I also think differently about George Melachrino since I learned his entire family was killed when the Germans dropped a bomb on his house during WWII. Some how he found a way to go on and ended up being hugely successful in the 50s.
