this is from the one i’ve titled marco 1.6, but that doesn’t mean that much bc my numbering system leaves much to be desired lol

Gentle fingers brushed Michael’s cheek as Marco played with a curl fallen in front of his face, and, letting his eyes slip shut, Michael exhaled softly, forcing himself to let go of some of the tension his body carried and relax.

“Your birthday’s coming up, right?”

Just like that, all the tension rushed back. Michael sat up, disturbing Marco’s hand and making it flop to the pillow he just vacated.

“I asked Isobel,” he explained without waiting for Michael to ask.

Michael grunted and gave in. “Yeah. Mid-June, I guess.”

“You’re gonna have to give me some gift ideas.”

“Why don’t you just ask Isobel?”

Marco folded his hands behind his head and grinned, rolling his eyes. “I did, actually. But all her ideas were sex stuff, and like…” He nudged Michael’s knee with his. “I think we’ve got that covered already.”

“Sex stuff is fine,” Michael said, rolling his shoulders in a shrug. Part of him was pissed that Isobel thought he was that shallow, but what did it matter? “But really, you don’t have to get me anything. We haven’t celebrated in over a decade. It’s not a big deal.”

“Aww, c’mon.”

The bed dipped as Marco sat up to make himself level with Michael and wrapped an arm around his waist, sending a frission across Michael’s muscles, some sort of subcutaneous flinch blessedly too subtle for Marco to notice. Marco bled this casual intimacy everywhere he went, all over everyone he cared about, and Michael still didn’t know what to do with it, with being counted among that number.

Marco said, “It doesn’t have to be a big deal, I just want to do something nice, make your day a little special. That’s what birthdays are good for.”
