Augustus "Auggie" Ellings is, in every universe, the second-born son of Beaumont and Cecilia Ellings, a wealthy lawyer and former pageant queen turned bored housewife respectively. They live in Georgia.
Edmund Ellings is Auggie's older brother. They're 4 years apart in age and Edmund is just kind of a dick? Edmund is essentially being groomed to take over his father's law firm and as a result his life is heavily monitored and predetermined for him. Any frustrations with this way of life or really any emotion he ever has is turned into anger and taken out on Auggie. Read this for an insight into their relationship.
Auggie's parents do not want him and they do not care about him. They will throw money at him mostly in the hopes that he'll just disappear and never ask them for anything (it kind of works)
Margot is Auggie's twin sister. She doesn't always exist, but I thought it would be fun to think about what Auggie's life would be like if he did have a sister and then she became her own character. She and Auggie are obsessed with their own twinness. As children they once cut Margot's hair in the bathroom so that she and Auggie could be matching. As teenagers they traded clothes in the school bathroom and also played very weird games with the guys they pursued (if Margot and a boy broke up, Auggie would try to date him. Auggie hooked up with a guy that Margot then started dating and she cheated on him with the guy Auggie was in love with in his junior year). They're... well!
I haven't written much about Margot but I do know that if Beaumont is raising Edmund to take his place, Cecilia is raising Margot to take hers. She definitely got her daughter to bleach her hair and put her in pageants or at least tried to do something similar.
Elias Conrad works for Beaumont Ellings. I don't know enough about law firms or even what kind of law Beaumont practices to know specifics of Elias' job but I guess he's a lawyer? A junior lawyer? Is that a thing? Who cares. His job is important, basically. Elias is 10 years older than Auggie and therefore 6 years older than Edmund. Elias believes himself more worthy of taking over Beaumont's firm than Edmund. He's diligent and gets results, he's worked hard to get where he is, etc etc etc. Beaumont really respects Elias and invites him over for dinner and to the various parties Cecilia throws at their home. That's how Auggie and Elias meet. Elias is often the only person in the room who will pay attention to Auggie at all and that makes Auggie feel VERY weird.
The summer before Auggie goes away to college (he's 18), he and Elias (28) begin a sexual relationship. That summer, Auggie spends a lot of time at Elias' house. It's not healthy. I affectionately refer to this time as "The Summer of Auggielias".
Elias is living as the third version of Elias Conrad. He grew up as the first version, a quiet child with a troubled relationship with his father. When he was 15, his father passed away and he watched a bunch of people seemingly lie about what a great man his father was at his funeral and he had a little bit of a mental breakdown for 2 years (thats the second version of Elias). The third version is the one that got him into college and into the Ellings firm. The third version is entirely lies and never tells the truth. He sometimes gets close to truth with Auggie.
Auggie attends a highly prestigious art school where he and his small cohort are involved in the semi-accidental death of their professor/mentor but never caught. This part of his life is not fleshed out yet because I'm doing something completely separate with it.
After he graduates, he moves to New York and is eventually able to become a full time exhibiting artist. He has a gallery show when he's in his mid-thirties that Elias randomly shows up to. At this point, Elias has a wife and son (Harriet and Davey). I won't piece the whole puzzle together but tl;dr that visit at the gallery eventually leads to the events of this piece
I think that's everything!! Well. Not everything. But the basic info! I'm currently working on a large document that contains a bunch of auggielias vignettes spanning the entirety of their relationship. i also have some ideas for elias pov stuff and i'd love to write margot because i've written 0 margot!! idek what her relationship with edmund is like!! the auggieverse keeps rapidly expanding
elias and his father used to go hunting together so he knows how to shoot and is skilled with a knife. edmund has probably shot clay or gone on a fancy people hunting trip so i imagine he knows how to use a gun as well. i think in college margot would have gone to a shooting range and i could see her getting pretty into shooting tbh. auggie is the only one who doesn't know how to do anything. he's delicate.
does your oc play any instruments? what is their skill level
i think margot is the only one who would. again, probably during college. maybe one of her roommates played guitar and she tried to learn from her. i could see her trying out a bunch of instruments, maybe taking some classes while she was at school. i could see her getting super into drumming and messing around with synths. i don't know that she's super technically skilled but she can at least bang something out on a few different instruments.
does your oc have any tattoos? do they want any (more) tattoos?
i've answered this for auggie and elias already but margot definetely has tattoos! similar to auggie, i'm not really sure what she would have but also similar to auggie i could see her getting a stick and poke from a friend in college and then getting more when she's out on her own in her 20s. i think she has more than auggie does and has maybe thought about getting tattoo and/or piercing certified.
does margot interact with elias at all or is that relatio ship something auggie keeps to himself..
so. i don't think auggie and elias happens in the universe where margot exists. a big part of auggie's attraction to elias and his decision to act upon it is that he's been incredibly lonely and neglected for his entire life. his family has no use for him so they don't really care about him. elias asks auggie questions, brings him into conversations, actually acknowledges him and the things he does. because that's basically a first for auggie, he's kind of addicted to it. in the margotverse, margot and auggie are extremely close. inseperably close for most of their life. they are both certainly still neglected and mistreated by their family (in different ways) but they have each other so they are both much less lonely than they would be if the other did not exist.
that being said, if auggielias happened in the margotverse, auggie would absolutely try to keep it a secret and margot would absolutely find out. i do not know what would happen from there. i think she might try to kill him.
also as your partner I want you to know that I'm listening to paramore rn and I think Margot should just be a hayley williams fc. thanks for giving me brainworms.
oh it's already canon that margot loves paramore. misery business is on her wip playlist. she and auggie blast that album in her bedroom while they share a pack of cigarettes and paint each others nails and shit
what are your oc’s career/general life desires? what do they want to get the most out of life?
auggie is a printmaker and full time exhibiting artist, which is exactly what he wants to do (its truly the only piece of happiness i'm willing to give him). outside of his career i don't think he really knows what he wants. he wants attention, certainly, but he doesn't know how to get it in a healthy and sustainable way. would he like to get married? settle down? have kids? i don't think so. he's not interested in family like that. i think his time at college did make him a bit more interested in a sort of found family/chosen family/close group of friends/relationships kind of thing but i imagine that sort of fell apart after the events of his junior year. he would never admit it, but i think he wants them (his college cohort) back in his life again. he's very suited to dorm life.
other characters under the cut because i love to ramble
elias wants power. he wants to be the one who takes over the ellings law firm, he wants to feel firmly in control over himself, his life, his narrative, and the people around him. he does not get to take over the ellings law firm but eventually becomes a partner at a similarly well-respected firm in savannah. he gets married, he has a kid, he does live that perfectly manicured life that he broke himself down and rebuilt himself to want. he still wants auggie though. auggie scratches a different, more intense itch for him. he will always want that, i think, no matter how much he wishes he wouldn't.
margot has a number of semi-conflicting desires. she wants to be in control of her own life, she wants to be tied to her brother forever. she wants to be taken care of, she wants to do everything for herself. she is not given a lot of time to think about herself during her childhood, unlike auggie, so i think her own career/life path desires aren't something she thinks about as much. when it comes time to go to college i think she goes to a large state school (somewhere good, but one of those places where you can kind of major in anything). i think she changes her major a couple times. as much as i love the idea of her and auggie as a weirdo art duo (in this reality she would maybe major maybe in film or music? an arts-related field) i could also see her going against everything and majoring in a science, or dropping out and going to technical school. just something totally out of the blue and different. i don't even know if she'd like it, i just think she'd be floundering a lot on her own and want to do everything she possibly could to make up for all the time when she couldn't make her own decisions.
is the margot &auggie story the same story as Auggie Margot ? as in, are the timelines with and without twin sister Margot twisting up with with each other in the same story, or is this strictly an au situation... id love to hear about your feelings either way about having a single character make such a big difference..
strictly an au situation! margot’s existence kind of inherently changes a LOT about auggie’s. i haven’t explored it too deeply but it changes the dynamic of their family a good amount (part of auggie’s Problems is that his mother esp resents him for not being born a girl. when she does have that daughter i don’t think it makes her relationship with him Positive but it does remove some of that fundamental resentment). i also don’t think auggielias happens if margot exists not because auggie becomes a necessarily healthier person but i just can’t fathom those two characters both being in auggie’s life. i also don’t know how auggie’s college years go if margot exists. he would still at least try to go to this prestigious school but i don’t know that she would? it might be the first time they ever pursue something separate by choice (margot has always been forced into extracurriculars without auggie but this would be their first CHOSEN separation). she’s VERY important and i’m excited to spend time fleshing her out and finding her voice and desires in all this. i know a lot about how she affects other people’s lives and what she is Made to do but not a lot about what she wants. she and auggie are tied together very deeply though and that’s just as important to her as it is to her brother
