rare me-post but i realised very suddenly i have not, in fact, unfollowed t-swift's tumblr as i've just seen her new album announcement. n hey it looks fun it looks bold and #different etcetera but wow i could not stop thinking of that one post i read somewhere about how her music—at least, anything post-midnights—is just so. curated? carved out from the current pop culture. from people's expectations, i feel? the vault tracks from the rereleases just so happening to reference moments the fandom worships and loves, ttpd being self-obsessed with itself and its creator, lyrics that are contrived in the track but fit perfectly in a tiktok, collaborations with whoever is climbing the charts at the moment—phoebe bridgers, then ice spice, and now sabrina carpenter, in that order—track titles like "eldest daughter" and "i can fix him" lifted straight from online culture, references to surface-level greek mythology that gives the illusion of depth while still being mass marketable. it's. i don't know. fascinating. i still like some of her songs and i'm not bothered by it i guess, but once you see the performance it becomes impossible to unsee. and it's very very amusing that lots of fans still buy it as genuine and not contrived
