"The Lake" by Fever Ray

I come to you with an update on the weather: it's no longer quite so oppressive. It snowed the morning I wrote this, but we've also had beautiful sunny days and I'm well adapted to this hydrologic slot machine. When winter's at its bleakest, as I mentioned, I gotta bust out all the demon-haunted music and nothing grooves with pitch blackness in mid-afternoon (a completely different vibe from the grey dawn records I associate with Maria BC's Marathon) quite like the Knife's Silent Shout. Now that we're done with all that, clocks changed and sky blue, Karin Dreijer's Fever Ray is gifting us with "The Lake," exquisitely deranged like only spring can be. The night has lifted and in its wake is horror at midday, whirling dervish production and human bodies decomposing before they've even expired.

Fever Ray continues to move deeper into more conventional pop structure, and even as it smooths out some of the unpredictability of their earlier releases it's still working for them. "The Lake" is charged and chaotic, the trumpet sample lending an unhinged energy to the stomping beat. And Dreijer, as usual, is a live wire: undeniable and utterly arresting, they continue to contort their voice in unexpected directions, treating their vocal like a taffy puller treats candy. Part of me wonders if Fever Ray have carved out such a distinctive lane that narrowing it by committing fully to three-verses-and-a-chorus format will eventually lead to diminishing returns, but maybe I'm just being pessimistic. This is dance music for an unearthly carnival, and I'm happy we're invited along for the ride.
