#Repost @queensmuseum with @repostapp ・・・ Today is #InternationalWomensDay and we are honoring the women behind the Queens Museum's "Large Wall Series: Commissions by Contemporary Women Artists". In the spring of 2016, Mariam Ghani created "Garden of Forked Tongues" with the Endangered Language Alliance @elalliance, a large-scale infographic, that was based on data of the endangered languages spoken in Queens. An Index can be a trace, a signpost, an indicator or a measurement. Our Index begins in the gaps where language ends; that is in the records of absence and absences of records where official language fails and new language must be developed in its place explain Chitra Ganesh and Marian Ghani, the 2013-2014 A/P/A Artists-in-residence, whose installation Index of the Disappeared: Secrets told is on view at A/P/A Institute Gallery. On Thursday, March 12, Ghani will guide guests through the installation during at reception at the A/P/A Institute gallery.

Mariam Ghani Landscape Study: New Mexico, 2008-2010 1-Channel HD Video 22 minutes Edition of 5 + 1AP

Landscape Studies: New Mexico is a sort of abstracted pilgrim's progress through New Mexico's strange history of exploration, conquest, revolts, rodeos, mining, missile tests, and participant ethnography—all the projects of strangers passing through, and all of which have left marks on the landscape without altering its core characteristic, which is its tendency to swallow any human endeavor in the vast horizon of its indifference. The video was shot in six different sites in New Mexico, United States around the Galisteo Valley, Route 66, and the White Sands Desert, and its formal structure is organized by theories of the meanings of colors, directions, and clouds derived from the Tewa, a group of Native Americans whose lost pueblos dot the valleys. 

  The work greatly exemplifies the artist’s formal and conceptual preoccupations with landscapes that are marked by an inexplicable beauty and eeriness as no- man’s-lands everywhere are.
