When WWF expanded their drug testing policy to include all non-prescription drugs, including marijuana, it was Bret Hart who questioned management's decision on the latter. According to Mabel, Hart was the only wrestler who openly challenged this policy in the locker room in front of management.
Hart's concern was practical since the wrestlers who used marijuana typically would smoke a joint in their room and go to sleep. He argued that banning marijuana was a mistake, believing it would push wrestlers toward more dangerous alternatives, specifically, alcohol combined with prescription medications.
Within a few years of implementing this expanded drug policy, wrestler deaths began to increase.
