Mario Arroyave‘s series ‘Timeline‘ – a vision of alternative reality through visual repetition of water sports as a metaphor for time and space.

Inspired by the photographic motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge’s, Arroyave also captured images at controlled intervals of time. However, whilst Muybridge intention was to create the illusion of movement by reproducing them one after the other, Arroyave synthesizes them in a fixed space within a static image.

While shooting a television commercial in an aquatic complex, he noticed the water’s visually rich texture. “The effect of this over the skin of the players was so majestic that I decided to continue photographing water sports. Because there’s a lot of movement, the players are the focus of the game. Even taking a picture every 10 seconds, what you see in each image is completely different.”

Using Photoshop after capturing a significant amount of images, he starts to incorporate from 20 to 400 of them to achieve the final image; a procedure that usually takes him from 15 days to 3 months.

‘Línea de tiempo’ by Mario Arroyave

Mario Arroyave is a Colombian photographer and film-maker. In the photo set ‘Línea de tiempo’ he captures movements of various sports, mostly water sports. Mario Arryave uses pictures taken in different time to create harmonic photographic collages presenting unreal but coherent moment.

Inmersión III es un trabajo realizado por el artista colombiano Mario Arroyave, quien ha dedicado su carrera a la fotografía digital. Esta producción artística tiene como fin fusionar la captura de diferentes instantes aislados de una práctica común, en una sola imagen. El resultado de cada imagen se desprende de la creación a través de la observación, utilizando como método la repetición.  

Para el artista estas imágenes nos hablan del momento cuando el cuerpo humano irrumpe en la calma del agua y eleva su energía dinámica a través de la turbulencia, generando una fisura donde los parámetros físicos de nuestro común andar cambian. “Al observarlas, nos desprendemos de la gravedad como la percibimos en la cotidianidad, experimentando otra dimensión que nos permite explorar nuevos limites”. 

Mario Arroyave presentará esta obra durante la Feria Internacional de Arte de Bogotá, ARTBO 2015, a partir del primero de octubre.
