MARISA ANDERSON – Into the Light (Chaos Kitchen)

I can’t think of a current guitarist whose music is so simultaneously bright and shadowy as the work of Marisa Anderson. Her notes and chords always glisten and gleam, shining beams of light through the speakers and never trying to hide anything about themselves. Yet there’s also so much gradation, so much nuance and in-between suggestiveness in her songs that sometimes it feels like they’re 100% effect - as if all the brightness is reaching our atmosphere long after the star it came from evaporated.

Measured on this beautifully blurry ratio of blindingly white to hypnotically grey, Into the Light just might be Anderson’s most accomplished album so far. Everything here sits on the potent fulcrum between clarity and subtlety, between knowing exactly what you’re hearing and still feeling like there’s so much more to be heard. That’s especially true of the album’s second half, wherein Anderson finds a rarified zone of delicacy and insinuation that fills me with shivers. The triple play of “Chimes”, “Resurrection”, and “House of the Setting Sun” form a mini-miracle of sublime evocation. It’s those kind of moments when Anderson’s music reminds you how much light, color, and feeling simple, hand-made songs are capable of conjuring.

MARISA ANDERSON on Into the Light

I set out to make a beautiful record; one that physically felt good to listen to. I tried to make something simple and direct that could be a balm for the ugliness in the world right now. But I can’t ignore current events, the daily news bringing stories of displaced people all over the world. I considered the word ‘alien’; this word that means someone not from earth, or just not from this country. I considered that until 1848, all of the American Southwest belonged to Mexico. The first song was written for a puppet show about a friend who got dangerously lost in the backcountry of the Sonoran Desert. From there, the record spun out into my own memories and impressions of living, traveling and working throughout the Southwest. Years ago I crossed the Mojave Desert on foot; I’ve been arrested for trespassing on federal land in Nevada, squatted an abandoned trailer in New Mexico, herded sheep on the Navajo reservation in Arizona. A narrative started to emerge as I worked on the songs, connecting my memories to an imagined protagonist who drops out of the sky, into the desert. The record came to be the story of someone with no context; an outsider for whom time and space bend and shift until history has no meaning.
