A review of A Corpse Wired for Sound by Merchandise
It’s been some time since I’ve been able to write a review of a record. My general feeling on the band is positive. They seem to be doing things their way and pays no mind to whoever thinks otherwise. Good for them.
I’ve enjoyed all of their efforts and their latest record A Corpse Wired for Sound seems to be the next evolution of their sound. I enjoyed the darker tones of this record. It seemed edgier, which I always appreciate.
The drum machine seems to have made a comeback on this record. I really missed that with the previous album. The live drums were fun, but I love the cold and heartless sound it gave the songs. Children of Desire was the record that really captured me and that drum machine was mostly to blame. In A Corpse Wired for Sound, it seems to bring back that cold, dark feeling that I got originally. It’s lovely.
While I know it is not fair to compare, A Corpse Wired for Sound seemed to be a slight step down for me. Maybe it had something to do with their last record being so different than previous efforts, the dramatic shift from the noisy-as-fuck to a studio-ized/polished sound surprised me. I am a sucker for a nice sounding album, but then again a wall of noise is awesome too.
Love this video, especially that it was shot at the love @tampatheatre
While the Porch Beer Club doesn’t really have an official ranking system. If an album is balls, we typically just don’t post anything or, in the case of Lana Del Rey, we provide a one-word review or post a picture of the album cover with us flipping it the middle digit or throw water balloons at their fans. Childish? Yes.
If an album is good, we write about it and pay the band endless compliments. A Corpse Wired for Sound is a good record. Should you run out and buy it? If you’ve got the cash lying around, sure. If you are already a Merchandise fan, you should definitely get it. it doesn’t disappoint.
Pick up A Corpse Wired for Sound at 4AD.
