Now days everybody is concerned about 'being green'. It is important to be envirmentaly responsible and active. We want to protect our planet from global warming and save it for the next generations.
The recycling has become an increasingly accepted practice in western countries. In Amsterdam most supermarkets have recycling bins for paper, glass and clothes. If you buy glass beer bottles or large plastic water / soft drink bottles you have to pay a refundable deposit (statiegeld) of €0.10 or €0.25 respectively. The empties should then be returned to a special machine at any supermarket - put the bottles in, press the button to get a refund receipt which can be used at the checkout.
In Amsterdam and The Netherlands the different types of recyclable materials collected include:
All types of paper/paperboard (excluding plastics, metal fragments and organic contamination)
Glassjars and bottles - by common collection points
Plastic- Type 1 and 2 PETE
Tires- some re-treaded, some mixed with ashpalt for road resurfacing
Metal cans- beverage and soup cans, although usually extracted from trash by separation techniques
Beer bottles through deposit systems
Plastic soda containers through deposit systems
Clothing and toys for second-hand use
Concrete and bricks used as roadfill, or grinded down and mixed as new
Household appliances - may also be returned through shop when buying new products
To recycle the waste you can contribute to the health of the environment by making it a part of the routine to separate and dispose the waste. It does help to cut down the amount of landfill waste that is simply being wasted. Recycling all of your home's waste newsprint, cardboard, glass and metal can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 850lbs. a year.
