#3686 - Pinus pinaster - Maritime Pine

A species I recognised from Perth, but was confused because the label at the Christchurch Botanical Gardens said Pinus pinaster, not Pinus radiata. That's because for the three decades I'd been mistaken about which pines they grow in the plantations around Perth - Radiata Pine is more popular in the Eastern states.

Native to the south Atlantic Europe region and parts of the western Mediterranean, and thrives in areas with a Mediterranean climate, and whilst it prefers acid soils can do well in basic soils, and even in sand. Those last few factors have made it an invasive species in South Africa, and the most common pine in SW Australia.

Thirty seamen of the crew of 260 lost their lives when the $18,000,000 liner became a blazing torch 40 miles off the French coast. Authorities are probing the cause of the disaster.
