boys from brazil (1991) by mark berthold i had fresh scans of pics i took when i roamed the world’s less beaten tracks with a full camera bag. this taken in 1991 with canon ‘new f1’ scanned fujichrome 100asa transparency.
rio’s inhabitants are renowned for their vitality and it’s not just apparent in the carnival or on the football field. michael jackson’s video of his they don’t care about us depicts the downtrodden but they emerge as irrepressible. i took this photo of this group of young men from a following vehicle just out of town and even here their body language pulsates. hell, we were both on the road and hell that’s a great feeling."
come to think of it, i wrote a song about all that www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hf01hRzzj-M
S.E. brazil's rainforest (1991) by mark berthold
the amazon's (naturally) turbulent side (1991) by mark berthold
"even equatorial rainforest has seasonal variations and the “dry” (or rather less wet) season is from may to september and the remainder of the year is really wet. but expect the unexpected. an unexpected cold-snap also meant we had to cancel a visit to a river bank rich in the natural salts so favored by scarlet macaws. but a trip up the amazon is not just a matter of ticking off all the items of a touristic shopping list. it is about encountering something bigger than oneself and can be adjusted to but not negotiated with. unlike in our predictable daily routines back home. the german film director werner herzog understands this - see his fitzcarraldo. but it did provide the opportunity to experience as well as capture a more turbulent side to this amazonian tributary. the population of biting insects also plunged.
at least the above was true in 1991 when the photo was taken but with increasing deforestation 40% of amazonia has a savannah climate and soon all hell will break loose."
