relics of the buddha: the timeline

2026: following intervention by the indian government, the sotheby’s auction was halted and the piprahwha jewels were repatriated to india. the small portion of the find (aprox one fifth) that w.c peppé had been permitted to retain was reunited with 221 gems from the original cache of more than 1200 items received by the kolkata museum from w.c peppé. together with other artefacts from the original discovery, the newly returned gems were placed on public display at the rai pithora cultural complex in new delhi. the exhibition, the light & lotus: relics of the awakened one, was formally opened by prime minister narendra modi at the beginning of january.

in the exhibition catalogue, the indian ministry of culture wrote: in the repatriation of piprahwa gems, the role of chris peppé is very significant. chris peppé, great-grandson of w. c. peppé, brought the piprahwa relic gems into the public domain by publicly displaying them and facilitating their return to india. through his carefully preserved family archives—photographs, excavation notes, correspondence, and records—he enabled rigorous scholarly research, setting a model for responsibly sharing colonial-era heritage and restoring historical transparency.
