After eight years of waiting, the fans of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel now have all reasons to smile after their team secured another championship trophy.

Photo from PBA website Barangay Ginebra may have a lot of other weapons now, but they proved on Friday that old reliables Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa can definitely still be counted on when the going gets tough. In a critical stretch in Game Four of the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup, the Kings got a huge boost, particularly from Helterbrand, who scored 11 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting clip in the fourth quarter. “Whenever you come off the bench, you’ve got to provide some energy. You want to go out there and help the team,” Helterbrand told InterAksyon.com in an exclusive interview. Ginebra had a disastrous third quarter where they were outplayed by Meralco, 39-12, to fall behind by 16 points heading into the fourth quarter. But that’s when Ginebra coach Tim Cone turned to his veteran backcourt duo in Helterbrand and Caguioa, who more than heeded the call. Helterbrand, who was celebrating his 40th birthday on Friday, knocked down two triples while Caguioa made a crucial offensive rebound and putback as part of a 16-0 run that tied the game at 74-all. After two Meralco free throws, Caguioa hit a jumper from the baseline and Helterbrand hit his third three-pointer to give Ginebra a 79-76 lead to the cheers of the crowd. The Kings outscored the Bolts, 30-12, in the fourth for an 88-86 victory. “It was just like the old days. It was like me and Mark were the ‘Fast and the Furious,’” Helterbrand shared. “Honestly, it felt really good.” Cone gave all credit to the two former PBA MVPs and praised the mentality they brought to the game, especially at a point where Ginebra needed something to break them out of a slump. “Honestly, Jayjay and Mark are the people you should be talking to and not me,” Cone told sportswriters during the postgame interview. “It’s funny that when it came to a time we really, really need then to step up, they just had no fear. ‘ONE LAST RIDE’ | Ginebra vets Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand savor return to PBA Finals

PBA Media Bureau Former PBA MVPs Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand are the only remaining members of the last Barangay Ginebra team that won the championship in the 2008 Fiesta Conference. “The Last of The Mohicans,” as Helterbrand described it. But now the two have another chance to add another notch to their long, decorated careers after Ginebra booked a return trip to the PBA Finals – its first in three years. Helterbrand, who was named MVP the season of their last title, couldn’t find the exact words to express himself after the game. “This is surreal. I still feel it’s not in me yet. I don’t have the words to describe the win right now,” Helterbrand told sportswriters. Caguioa and Helterbrand, collectively known as ‘The Fast and The Furious’, just could not be happier to have another shot at the crown. “Me and him, we were looking at each other. We just can’t believe that we’re here. For us, we were just thinking about the fans. They deserve this, more than us, dahil they’ve been there through thick and thin. Muntik na akong maiyak. I’m so happy we made it to the finals,” Caguioa said. “We gave each other a big hug. We’ve been here since the beginning, nagpalit ng mga coaches, players pero andito pa rin kami. Lalong-lalo na andyan pa rin yung mga fans. Kinikilabutan ako for the fans to be there for us.” Unlike in the past, where they’ve been the main weapons for Ginebra, the two veteran guards have had to take the backseat and watch younger stars like LA Tenorio, Sol Mercado and now, rookie Scottie Thompson take the lead. They’re happy to support the team from the bench, although Helterbrand admitted that it’s a vastly different experience from when he was spending most of the minutes on the floor. “It’s harder to watch than when you’re out there playing. It’s different. I’ve never been this nervous in my life. I have to go check my blood pressure,” he said. When their numbers were called late in the fourth quarter, though, both players were willing and able to help the cause, as both players made baskets in the endgame. Helterbrand said that they will be ready to do the same in the championship rounds. “I’m definitely ready for the finals. Coach Tim (Cone) did a great job all season to prepare us. He didn’t want us to get too high or too low, making sure that everyone is prepared and ready. He reminds us every practice that our goal is not to make it to the finals but to win the finals,” added Helterbrand. Both players know that this could be one of their last opportunities to win a title together and are ready to relish it. “One last ride,” Helterbrand said. “I’m happy, I’m sad at the same time. Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa moves up all-time scoring list, but happier for team success

PBA Media Bureau Barangay Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa scored 16 points on Wednesday to move into a tie with the late Arnie Tuadles in 18th place on the PBA’s all-time scoring list with 9,430 points. For the former MVP, while it was definitely an honor to join one of the greatest forwards to ever lace them up in the PBA, individual accolades have become less important to him at this point in his career. “I’ve been playing for a long time now. To me, it was never scoring. Now, when you’re getting older, you want to get more championships,” Caguioa told InterAksyon.com after his team’s win over Meralco. He added that he remembers watching Tuadles’ old games on television. “Nakita ko siya, I think sa mga Greatest Games,” Caguioa added. On this night, the Ginebra veteran was happier about seeing how far his team has come in the last few seasons – particularly on the defensive end, with twin towers Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar holding the fort inside. “It’s for the fans. The past couple of years, we haven’t been a really good team. Now, Coach Tim Cone brought to us the defense. Now, we’re getting more defensive-minded,” he said. “Those two guys, parang bonus na rin sa kanila yung scoring, something like what Greg did today. Sino yung binabantayan niyang import? He basically stopped him. I think the import was frustrated. Games like that, even the last game, Japeth and Greg, yung loob namin ngayon nagiging solid.” Even the Kings import, Othyus Jeffers, has proven himself an excellent addition to the team’s defensive schemes. “We have a great import, he’s a great defensive player,” he said. Caguioa is secure in his team’s ability to help each other out on defense, something that could be important for them in their playoff run. “Defensively, I’m really confident. Bonus na lang yung offense,” he added. “Defensively, everyone’s just aware of helping each other out. That’s all. Makikita mo when someone gets beat, guys are gonna be there para tumulong, we’re gonna be there to back them up.” And not only are they making stops, they are also continuing to learn the triangle offense. While it remains a work in progress, Caguioa believes that the team is improving, especially with getting more players involved. “Going into the playoffs, I’m really confident now. Makikita mo yung flow ng laro ngayon. Everyone is getting their shots, it’s not just one player. Madaling i-stop yung isang player but paano mong pipigilan yung lima sa loob?
