Phoenix newcomer Cruz sees Baguio as mentor, challenger

Mark Cruz has yet to make a proper impression in the PBA and with his trade from Star to Phoenix, the diminutive point guard could still face another hurdle. Joining Cruz as a newcomer to the Fuel Masters is veteran guard Cyrus Baguio. Cruz was formerly part of a Hotshots squad that included Mark Barroca and Justine Melton, and this time the former Letran Knight will have to jostle for minutes against Baguio, Chico Lanete, Josh Urbiztondo, and Simon Enciso with the Fuel Masters. Cruz, though, sees the arrival of Baguio as a challenge. “Oo naman, siyempre, hindi lang si Cyrus kundi lahat ng nandito,” said Cruz. “Sabi ni coach kung sino papasok dito kailangan i-welcome sa family, pero pag nasa loob na yung competition nandun.” “’Yung minutes na gusto namin makuha kay coach kailangan paghirapan.” While Cruz has yet to finish his first year in the league while Baguio has played in the PBA for more than a decade, the rookie expects himself to be a better player under the veteran’s tutelage. Cruz is aware of Baguio’s unselfishness with the ball and he hopes to pick up on the veteran smarts that the gunner brings to the team. “Nung nakita ko si Cyrus, hindi siya mahirap pakisamahan, willing siya mag give up ng bola and pag pinasa mo sa kanya gagawin niya lahat para maka score and makatuong sa team,” said Cruz. “Expect ko na mas madadagdagan ang knowledge ko ngayong makakasama namin siya. Cruz, Enciso look to speed up Phoenix’s running game

PBA IMAGES Exciting times ahead for Phoenix as it welcomes its new backcourt duo in Mark Cruz and Simon Enciso. The rookies are expected to take the reins in ushering coach Ariel Vanguardia’s run-and-gun system this 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup, and the young turks expressed their readiness for the challenge that lies ahead. “It’s fun. We’re in a new team so we’re still trying to get our chemistry down and just working together,” said Enciso. “It’s a great process and you got to love the process.” “Ginagawa ko lang yung mga sinasabi nila coach. Medyo di naman ganun kahirap yung adjustment kasi I’m used naman sa sistema ni coach,” Cruz shared. Known as stupendous scorers in their own right, both skippers share the same sentiment with this new found partnership, and it really helps that Vanguardia set an offensive system that suits both guards. “Ang gusto ni coach, fast-paced eh. I think nakita ni coach na pag nagsabay kami ni Simon, talagang mabilis kasi yun ang strength namin,” said Cruz. “I feel the offense fits me and Mark, and also Josh (Urbiztondo). This offense is high octane and that’s what I like to play,” Enciso echoed. Their entry to the Fuel Masters guarantees not just a new beginning for both guards, but also an extended responsibility with their playing time sure to have an uptick compared to what they had in their former teams. “I look at it the same thing. Kapag binigyan ako ng chance, gagawin ko lang yung best ko. Ipapakita ko kung ano ang maitutuluong ko sa team kasi ganun din naman ginagawa ko sa Star. Every time na may chance ako, ginagawa ko lang yung best ko,” said Cruz. Though he feels the same, Enciso is setting a higher standard for himself in Phoenix. “Every new beginning comes a challenge. As a basketball player, I always love the challenge and take the challenge up to myself,” he said. “It’s just about playing as a team and winning as a team. Star lands RR Garcia in 8-player trade with GlobalPort, Phoenix

PBA Media Bureau The Star Hotshots added some depth to their lineup after landing RR Garcia, Keith Jensen and Rodney Brondial in a three-team trade approved by the PBA on Wednesday. In the deal, Star gave up Yousef Taha and Ronald Pascual in exchange for GlobalPort’s Jensen and Jonathan Uyloan. The Hotshots then sent Uyloan, Mark Cruz and Norbert Torres to Phoenix which in return gave away Garcia and Brondial. Star makes playoffs, beats Mahindra

PBA IMAGES Star banked on an unlikely hero to upend Mahindra, 84-73, and clinch the last spot in the 2016 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum. Mark Cruz came off the bench for the Hotshots and unleashed a scintillating fourth quarter, firing 14 points to finish with a career-high 18 to tow his squad in a knockout game. “It doesn’t matter what spot you end up as long as you make it,” said Star head coach Jason Webb, whose squad finished the eliminations with a 5-6 record. “Even if we’re in a twice-to-win disadvantage, at least we’re there, we’re fighting and we’re still alive. All credit to the guys and the God-given talent they have, the God-given heart the guys have.” Ricardo Ratliffe paced Star with 24 markers and 16 rebounds, while Ian Sangalang added 12. Mark Barroca got two stitches above his right eye after he went down early in the first quarter. He returned in the second and quarterbacked Star in the clutch. “I feel so proud to be coaching these guys,” said Webb. From a 57-all deadlock, Star unfurled a huge 14-1 run to grab a 71-58 lead, anchored by huge plays from Mark Cruz with 4:55 remaining. Mahindra refused to sink with Karl Dehesa and Aldrech Ramos nailing treys to keep the Enforcers in the running, but Cruz nailed back-to-back triples to seal the game for the Hotshots. Mahindra bowed out at 4-7, joining Phoenix, Blackwater, and GlobalPort in the bottom four. Augustus Gilchrist led the Enforcers with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Ramos and Dehesa both wound up with 13 markers apiece.
